I really have tried but how so I rep a fear of being trapped/caged in etc. Am just typing up the case of a patient who when I asked about fear she said "Fire - I always check for the way out when I go somewhere." On enquiring further it is a fear of being trapped. She has a fear of having a car crash and not being OK - of being strapped in a wheelchair. She keeps a hammer in the bathroom in case of fire to smash the double glazing and climb onto the flat roof. "I'd rather be dead than unable to do things for myself."
Any ideas on rubrics for this. I have prescribed as she came for an acute catarrh situation for which Kali Bic fitted so well that I don;t know what I shall give if it does nothing!! She is on asthma inhalers though!!

ambra (case)
I am claustrophobic and have difficulty in crowds. I avoid elevators and stand with my finger on the
emergency button when I ride in them. I don't trust anything man-made. I'm very safety conscious and
very aware.

chocolate (case)
She suffers from panic attacks. 'I get panicky in public places. Especially when in a line-up, I often want
to stand up and leave. Crowds make me feel claustrophobic, as if I'm going to suffocate. Sometimes I get
short of breath then, and fear I am going to faint. I get hot and sweaty, with waves of heat rising up to my
head. I feel like screaming then, wanting to escape, but not wanting others to notice my distress. They'd
think I'm crazy. I also feel trapped when in traffic jams. I never drive on the highway. Your life is in
danger there (chuckles).

A Definite need for space and expansion. Find myself getting very claustrophobic in crowds and closed
spaces. Today I was in a multi-story car park and had to slow on one of the ramps. I could feel the whole

however, i, too, would be interested in a broader view of this concept. i find it very often that people report feeling trapped in their lives. often it is a feeling of being stuck and not being able to get out. but other times they feel trapped, caught up in the web of their lives and cant find a way out.

Thanks a lot for your rubrics. This is not a claustrophobia as I really checked through that one. One thing Andy from all your eliminations in that Ars,. and Nux came up in nerly everything and it is one of these two remedies that I see as a constitional but will have to do some more talking with her before I choose. It looks as if she may be Ars. now but was very Nux in her younger days.

Dear Rochell, apart from all the obvious 'trapped' and 'encaged' and 'fire'
and 'escape' and 'fear of being hurt' and also 'under the control of
someone else' as well as 'against her will' rubrics, I felt that what she
said ....."I would rather be dead than unable to do things for myself" to be
the core of this.

You suggested Arsenicum in another post which seems to be the reverse of
this situation - they need a lot of support systems in place. There are so
many 'breaking' out remedies that perhaps you need some physicals to help
out here.

The Kali bich catarrh is very specific - Hydr and Lyss come close - the
inhalers might be masking some symptoms - hopefully you know what the
condition was like before she started on them which might give a more
reliable picture. Inhalers might well produce a clogged up and stringy
catarrh that resembles Kali bich.

Lungs, suffocation, trapped mucous, against her will, needing to expand etc
- even reducing in this manner suggest many cross references - tuberculinum,
sepia, the snakes, that I would look towards some key modalities or other
physicals to get a clearer picture.

Dear Joy,
Thanks for your suggestions. I am having her back in after she has been abroad as she says everything is better in the warmth. She has been on inhalers since 1980 so I haven't really a cat in hells chance of finding the symptom picture before this!! It started after her first child so maybe that is where I will look. Because 12 years ago she had nasal polyps successfully removed I was thinking more of Sycosis and Thuja than Tub. but we will see. As usual the cases I tend to get are rarely straight forward.

Kali Bi was chosen because she wakes starving every morning despite having a snack before bed, she drinks 1 .5 litres of water in the night, crusts up the nose in the morning, a hot cup of tea amel, coryza fluid night etc etc!!!

In my rep for all her symptoms Nux is top followed by good old Sulphur (not indicated) then Kali bi , then Thuja and Ars. We will see how the case progresses.

Interestingly Hahnemann actually states fear of fire (per se) as a symptom of latent psora in the Chronic Diseases. Since fire is an "element", it could be significant, and from your description was the first thing she mentioned re: feeling trapped--i.e. methods to "get out". But there are other trapped modes she brings up. If we do consider Fire to be a very important component of the fear, then the nasal polyps, and generally > warmth might bring Psor to mind, although there is nothing else seemingly to indicate it skin-wise or otherwise. If the "trapped" is part of a
general fear state, then the rubric as looked at above may not be helpful, which is what may be the case. Ignis alcoholis (fire) has not the fear of being trapped.

The "I'd rather be dead than unable to do things for myself." may not actually indicate self-reliance, but may be compensatory actions/feeling knowing that she is actually really dependent, so I might not rule out a "dependent" remedy just on this, although as Joy states, Arsenicum would not nec. be expected to do all these precautionary measures on their own.

Joy brought up the Cuprums, these in the "defense" (soldieresque) section, and your client seems to be bent on preparation (defense) from the possible dire circumstances of fire or other mishap which could entrap; and Cuprum also has a strong fear of fire. Any other evidence for Cupr?

Teucrium has polyps and the sxs:
---Continued stoppage of nose after removal of polyps. (not sure this was in case, but if Kali-bi given, I infer it must have been)
--Irritability when TOO MUCH MEDICINE (eg inhalers since 1980?) has produced an oversensitive state and remedies fail to act [3; Ph-ac.]. (In this case the "trapped" would be seen as the "oversensitive state" which is of course a big stretch
Could the polyp removal be important as an etiology (eg when was her 1st child?)
Here's an interesting tidbit which came from Harry Van Der Zee (I believe) bit on miasms which is in the RFWorks library; it refers to a fear relating to a past-life (ie not this life) trauma being healed by a remedy. Not to go too far afield, but where does this trapped feeling really come from? This would probably be an area to investigate--if necessary and remedies don't act, hypnosis is a good way to investigate it if there are not dreams or waking feelings which indicate origin:

It may be way off, but maybe ask: how did she deliver her child, did it 'get
stuck', and how was she delivered (get born) herself? (While being delivered
there isn't a lot you can do yourself).

Hi Rochelle,

The way she expressed about her fear makes me think of fear of losing
control. Staph is one of the remedies listed, which might relate to the
circumstances relating to the birth(Caesarian?) of her child. Apart, from
that similarity, Staph quite possibly doesn't fit with the rest of the case.
I think Hennie mentioned this(birth) being linked to the time the fear
began - so makes you wonder what was it about the birth/pregnancy did she
lose control. Patient really doesn't want to be left in the situation where
she would be unable to look after herself if injured/disfigured etc.
