Hi all,
Weeks back, someone asked re smallpox. I started to send this then, but got
bogged down... Here are some posts I've collected on the subject of
smallpox; maybe folks can add or comment on any of it.
Remedies mentioned: Rubric of 54 rxs; Sarracenia purpurea; thuja;
Vaccininum, Variolinum and Malandrinum.
Sounds like there are plenty of places to start! So many directions, so
little time...
Cheers,
Shannon

...
There are varied references for remedies for these conditions [anthrax,
smallpox] -and if not on this list then on others I have seen requests from
people in areas closer to Iraq who express their real concern that they need
to be genned up-so how about the posting of a list of Rx for these
conditions, perhaps with indications -many people dont have the relevant
MM's--this would not only help those who might need the Rx's but also
explain to others more about the Homoeopathic approach.?
It might also give listees esp students an interesting series to
download.
As Bamber Gascoine used to say-'your starter for ten':-
Combined Rubrics-smallpox (54) : acon., am-c., am-m., anac., ant-c., ant-t.,
apis, arn., ars., bapt., bell., bry., calc., canth., carb-ac.,
carb-v., chin-s., chlor., cimic., clem., cocc., crot-h., cupr-acet.,
gels., hep., hippoz., hydr., hyos., kali-bi., lach., maland., merc.,
merc-i-r., mill., mur-ac., nat-m., nit-ac., op., ph-ac., phos., plat.,
puls., rhus-t., sarr., sec., sil., sin-n., stram., sulph., thea., thuj.,
vac., vario., verat-v.
plus a snippet of MatMed:
Sarracenia purpurea:-
The use of the Pitcher Plant in small-pox is a discovery of the
Indians of North America, the spotted appearance of the plant probably
suggesting a resemblance to the disease.
Hale has collected much confirmatory evidence of its power to
antidote the small-pox poison.
A proving by T. C. Duncan, Thomas, and others brought out symptoms of
fever, backache, headache, and gastric disturbance...
.............In an epidemic occurring in the environs of Wavre, Sarr.
was given to two thousand persons living in the very middle of the
disease and coming in constant intercourse with it, but all who took
Sarr. escaped, during the same epidemic two hundred cases were treated with
Sarr. without a death.
Bilden, who used the ix tincture in an epidemic with success,
concludes that Sarr. is to small-pox what Gels. is to bilious fever.
Hale quotes Surgeon-Major C. G. Logie's (allopath) account of his
experience with Sarr. (decoction probably) in small-pox: "Four of the cases
in my hospital have been severe confluent cases.
They have throughout the disease all been perfectly sensible, have
had excellent appetites, been free from pain, and have never felt weak.
The effects of this medicine, which I have carefully watched, seemed to
arrest the development of the pustules, killing, as it were, the virus from
within, thereby changing the character of the disease and doing away with
pitting." A number of eye symptoms appeared in the provings, and Sarr. has
cured disordered vision.

. . .
One of the incredibly tragic ironies here is that Thuja, arbor vitae (tree
of life), the eastern white cedar of North America, so central in the lives
& traditions of many native american peoples, given as a gift to save the
lives of the Champlain expediton from scurvy by a Cree guide & subsequently
introduced to Europe, & later capturing the imaginations of homoeopaths for
a proving, became nearly a specific in European homoeopathy for the
treatment & omoeoprophylaxis of smallpox (see,e.g., Boenninghausen's
article Concerning the Curative Effects of Thuja in Small-pox, Allg. hom.
Zeit. 38 p.21, in his Lesser Writings).
Smallpox was decimating the natives of the North American west in the years
of the Louisana purchase and European exploration of the Missouri, the first
decade of the 1800's, as Hahnemann was developing the foundations of
homoeopathy and Jenner was simultaneously introducing widespread smallpox
vaccination in Europe.
It is no small wonder that a Sycotic disease should follow in the footsteps
of this Sycotic sociopolitical westward expansion. Ever cut down an eastern
white cedar (Thuja occidentalis)? Attractive on the outside, hollow in the
middle - what better simile could we find for the Sycotic attitudes of
euro-american culture as it met the indigenous cultures of the Americas?
Smallpox certainly killed a lot of people. The attitudes of Sycosis have
destroyed cultures. It is tragic that the natives of North America did not
have the time or experience with this disease to find their (our) cure in
the woods around them.

A look in Hering's Guiding Symptoms will give you a "list of authorities."
Vacininum and Variolinum are seen as one.
Variolinum had fragmentary provings by Malcolm Macfarland and can be found
in his book on High Potency Provings. Fincke and Swan did fragmentary
provings.
Malandrinum was first published in the North American Journal of
Homeopathy, vol. 30 pg. 44 and vol. 32 page 115.
No. I do NOT have a copy in my collection.
Protocols? Ya gotta be kidding! No one had protocols back then!
Macfarlan fed the remedies to unsuspecting patients.
You are looking at one of the areas where homeopathy begins to fall
apart. We have records of clinical uses, but not much in the way of
provings.
