cat case

I understand your feelings, both not wanting him admitted and the feeling he might die if he is hospitalized, and also your feeling of guilt. I have also struggled with this dilemma with ferals and it often seems you cannot win. BUT...

You really need more information, the kind that will come from a qualified veterinarian examining the cat. He needs his heart and lungs listened to. He needs his bladder and abdomen palpated. He needs his stool checked, because I do believe that he may have intestinal worms.

Can you not find a house call vet? If you live in a rural area, a ranch call/large animal vet might be able to come out. If you live in an urban area, just start calling vets, explain you have a terrified but FRIENDLY cat who was a feral kitten, who is severely ill and nearly died from stress at the vet's, and you are seeking a housecall for a comprehensive exam, bloodwork, and urinalysis. Beg, plead, and bribe, but get someone to come out and visit your cat. You can also bring in a urine and stool sample and possibly get a vet tech, if you cannot get a vet, to come out to the house and draw some blood and listen to his chest with a stethoscope.

You say your cat is twelve... he could easily live until he is 20 or older, so please don't give up on him just because of his age.

Also, and I think you already know this, throw the Science Diet away. Do you know what kind of stones he had? Don't keep giving him an unbalanced diet of raw meat, because cats, MUCH more so than dogs, have a very specific range of nutrients they require to be healthy, and while a dog can go along pretty well on an unbalanced diet for months, a cat really cannot. ESPECIALLY a cat who is ill! There are several good recipes for FLUTD kitties that use fresh wholesome ingredients; if you don't have one I'd be glad to share some recipes from Dr. Pitcairn's and Dr. Strombeck's books; there are also some on the website at http://www.holisticat.com (which is also a wonderful email list where you'll find a lot of ideas to help your cat!).

I am not saying homeopathy cannot treat your cat. I believe it can. But you need more information to guide you to a remedy. I have never successfully treated chronic disease (and this is an acute flareup of chronic disease) in an animal without a veterinary examination and information only a veterinary examination can give me. I am lucky enough to have a vet who is a classical homeopath, but even when she was my long distance vet, I used local non-holistic vets to do the exams and testing to help guide her to the correct remedy. The more you know, the better your prescription will be.

Also, consider consulting a homeopath instead of treating your cat yourself. It can be incredibly hard to treat your own animal, especially when your emotions are negative (guilt, fear, giving up). Many homeopathic veterinarians have phone consulting practices, so it doesn't even matter if they are in your area or not.

In addition to more information, you also need to consider removing obstacles to cure, which might include a bad diet (I consider "Science Death" a bad diet for any living creature) and other issues.

I do believe your cat is seriously ill, but I don't think you have enough information to know if he is treatable or not.

I wish you all the very best,

Hi Christie,

Thank you for your suggestions. Julio has had no enemas for a few
days. I agree it isn't the best approach but he was having a lot of
difficulty. The vomiting, which only happened twice with the soapy
enema, seemed to relieve him. He was taken off Science diet junk
some months ago, switching him to a more raw based diet with
additives. Julio is actually 14 years old and like you, I don't
consider that particularly old. Many here are much older than that!

I finally gave him one dose of Hep S in water on 12-29 and he has
shown nice improvement since. The first hours, after Hep, he looked
worse but his appetite and mentals improved. He has had several
normal looking stools(!), appetite increased (getting a very soupy
blend)and his spirits are quite good. Hydration holding. Walking a
bit stronger. He wanted to walk the pasture today and played with a
twig! I am very surprised (and enormously grateful) by this
improvement and hope it holds. I don't know if Hep S should be
repeated (succussed) if he begins to slip back or to look at other
remedies, since Hep seemed such a long shot at the time and didn't
rep out very high.

Thank you again for your interest and help. It is appreciated.

Best,
Georgianna

In my top-x for cats there is almost always a strong competition between
Phos, Ars and Nat.m. as (maybe underlying) remedies. From your description
(compliments!) I think I would have given a dose of Phos a chance to prove
itself.
