smallpox vaccine

I think one of the reasons the vaccination programme was stopped was that
more cases were as a result of vaccination than naturally occurring.

Since the vaccination was stopped, no more cases have been reported world
wide, except accidental contamination by lab workers.

yes, soroush, i have the same information.

also to be noted, is that most deaths occurred from secondary effects of smallpox such as dehydration.
as has been noted by others, these conditions are easily handled by contemporary health care systems.
most of the deaths occurring in the last epidemics were in very poor countries where health care systems
were inadequate and poverty was extensive. and lastly, the people dying were ususally in very poor health
condition to begin with, age being one factor.

The question I have on all this talk about small pox vaccine causing cases
of small pox is how can that be since the vaccine does NOT contain small pox
virus (variola) but vaccinia virus which is similar and in theory, provides
cross protection against small pox. That being said, I still would not
vaccinate my kids.

i would imagine the disease is close enough that that is what it is called.
as i gather from readings, they still dont know how smallpox kills. and
they have not done much research on it as far as i can tell. so all that
being given, i agree, stay away from it.

I'd just noticed the same thing, but I presume the issue is that, smallpox
or not, to judge by those pictures, it looks like a pretty dreadful disease.

(I wonder whether it's worse than cowpox?)
