Hi joy,

thanks for the ideas, actually sulph and lach had come first and second in
repertorisation ! - i had prescribed on the first visit itself, before a
complete repertorisation could be done.

i had taken the lying
on it ) - puls has > pressure / lying on painful side or more generally, >
lying on abdomen - i had taken this symptom as one of the pointers towarsd
puls

on a more general note, would you really consider a particular symptom will
"contradict" a remedy ? - in that if you have it, you will not prescribe a
certain remedy ? personally i would be more comfortable if for eg.in puls
the patient has averse to or atleast did not have a marked desire for warm
food/drinks. But at the same time, i wonder whether it cannot be an
expression of something lying "beneath" - sulph or lyc. for example.

regards,
Arun

Dear Arun,

Firstly, it really isn't good practice to prescribe a remedy which comes out
'top' of the repertorisation. The actual simillimum should be in every
carefully chosen rubric for the case but it might be the remedy which comes
'last' - the most important thing is that the Materia Medica reading of the
chosen remedy fits the case. If Sulphur came out 'on top' but doesn't really
fit the case then there is no reason to prescribe it. Sulphur is a polycrest
and is bound to figure quite prominently in many cases and will always
repertorise out somehow.

Secondly, modalities are very important, especially if they are strong and
defining. If they are weak and vague (e.g. the client says "I quite like to
eat cheese"), then they are not high ranking. This is why symptoms should be
ranked, graded and assessed within the totality of a case.

Pulsatilla has one sided conditions and also symptoms go to the side lain
on, so I am curious as to which Materia medica says that Puls is > lying on
painful side. The classic lying position of Pulsatilla is on the back with
hands behind the head.

So, if modalities are really strong in a case then I would be somewhat
concerned if the the chosen remedy contra-indicated them. But this just goes
to show how much emphasis should be placed on the totality of a case and the
materia medicas and less emphasis on repertory indications. Many cases are
not clear cut and will give evidence of symptoms which belong to a deeper
layer but these are often complicated cases with few symptoms overall, so
what modalities one has in these instances are even more important and have
to be investigated thoroughly. Overall this all comes down to the extreme
importance of careful case taking with factual details completely worked
through then graded.

Hope this helps.

best wishes, Joy

Hi joy,

on

from allen's key notes -
Amelioration - In open air; lying on painful side (Bry.); ....

also in lippe's, clarke's materia medica (puls -relations)

not surprising if we consider that most remedies with > pressure may be in >
lying on painful side ?

regards,
Arun

Dear Arun
If you look closely at the information regarding > pressure and Pulsatilla, you will find that it only referrs to Headache and Toothache. I do not believe that this can become a general modality when looking at the provings.
Allen TF Encyc of Pure mat med - headache, chest pain, pains in the bones of the legs better by pressure but in Hahnemann's Pura there was no reference from provers at all.

Also, I believe that the references you found in your library eg., Allen's key note, Lippe, Clarke may be an error when they say amelioration lying on painful side - at least as far as the provings are concerned. You will not find this in the Pura or Hering. However, if this symptom is derived from clinical experience, then that would explain the confusion.

Pulsatilla does not come up for menses with vomiting and fainting when doing a search of the materia medicas, but Synthesis references Boger/Boenninghausen and Morrison with these in RADAR. On looking at these texts in EH I did not find eg. a reference to menses and faintness except in Murphy and Schroyens(Synthesis). Therefore, it seems that these could be errors in synthesis.
I found that there is reference to vomiting from suppression of menses rather than during menses and from these to texts, there was no reference to fainting with menses.

This is not an isolated incident. I often find that what is in the repertory cannot be backed up in the mat meds. I think it is wise to be cautious about the Repertories as I don't think they are as reliable as we are led to believe.

(I keep hearing myself say this on these lists!)

If you plug in menses faintness and vomiting into the Mat meds in a computer program, you are likely to get around 12 remedies for consideration.

Regards

Robyn

Hi robyn,

The picture i have had of pulstilla since college had > pressure and > lying
on
painful side. (in fact first two remedies coming to mind for > painful
side would be bry and puls)
Now this does not mean they are always correct - most of the
remedy info in my college days came from allen's key note.
Now when i search for it, other MM's like mathur's and gunavante gives the
same info - there is no way of knowing whether they have clinical
confirmation or have merely taken the symptom from Allen's or Lippe's. But
i have to
say that i have always used both modalities as good indicaters for puls -
and not
only for headache or toothache

I would love to hear other's experiences on this

i agree that there are many mistakes in repertories, and would like to check
for MM confirmation as far as possible. For errors in synthesis i find the
synthesis forum a good place to report. The translaters over there will
verify and correct the error or will point us to the original source from
where the info came from.

you also said:

Pulsatilla, you will find that it only referrs to Headache and >Toothache. I
do not believe that this can become a general modality when looking at the

of the legs better by pressure but in >Hahnemann's Pura there was no
reference from provers at all.

i found this in hahn. MM pura (bjain's edition vol II)
- Throbbing, aching pain in the head, which was alleviated by external
pressure (aft. 1/2 h.).

as a foot note to this hahnemann says - "this diminution of the pains by
external pressure occurs in other pulsatilla pains; see 840, 841.)"
i think symptom no.840 and 841 refers to the leg symptoms you found in
allen's
encyclopedia

Arun

does anyone have information on vanilla? i am
interested in its neurological sx in particular.
the case is my cat who reportedly has some neurological
sx in the brain. a humming type of sensation that increases
until it explodes at the vertex. she has also recently lost
most of her vision. sees the world as if through a creamy
screen. shadowy shapes can be seen. sometimes greater visual
clarity. condition may have occurred from brain seizure about
18 months ago. loss of vision very recent.
vanilla reps out on this but i have very little information.
other thoughts most welcome.

FROM Louis KLEIN Can not remember where i got some marvellous notes of his from, Best Wihes, Jean
VANILLA PROVING
VANILLA PLANIFOLIA: Orchid family. Over 30,000 species of orchids on earth. Very little researched. 90% of all orchids live on trees.

Interesting aspect of proving is provers all thought they were proving some intense animal remedy.

In Mexico, where vanilla is natural, pollination is provided by a specialized bee, that doesn’t exist in Madagascar – so in Madascar the plants are pollinated by hand. Bees and bee stings (real ones) were part of the proving – the provers attracted bees who bit them.

Some orchids look so much like the sex organs of specific insects that the male insects mate with the orchid, pollinating it, and getting nothing from the effort.

Vanilla is a parasite as a baby plant, but stops being parasitic when it grows up.

TO READ A PROVING – LOOK FOR THE ANOMALIES, THE THINGS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IN ANY OTHER REMEDY.

Anomalous features of proving:

Time passing quickly or slowly WITH NO ANXIETY ABOUT BEING ON TIME. Singing in the shower, in the bathroom. Tea towels and dishrags come up as a theme -- bathrooms, kitchens. Food – grazing on quick foods, no time to actually prepare a meal – enjoying the sensuality of the food. Having hours of free time. Languid enjoyment of life. Issues about food – either enjoying eating or not having time to eat. Enjoying cooking and dinner parties.

Bee stings with emotional agitation, petulance. Scolding, barking orders.

Perfectionism in the material world. Want beautiful, fine things. Wanting to shop and spend a lot of money.

Sensual experiences are enchanting. Or make no impact.

(Lou Klein: Orchids good remedy for anorexia or overeating.).

Being productive, happy, energetic or opposite: lack of focus with laziness – but it’s really sensuality, enjoying the moment.

Idea of having to repel evil spirits – wearing charms of various kinds.

Absentmindedness.

Reliving the past – eating foods from the past.

Anticipation.

Delusions eyes with cataracts.

Feeling as if pregnant. (Lilies and orchids resemble each other).

Presence of someone or something touching or crowding. Caressing. Orchids like being crowded – won’t grow in a large pot.

Uncoordination.

Lower extremities and brain. Losing way. No sense of direction.

Cancer miasm: want to reorganize, clean out, everything has to be perfect, spotless. Desire for order and tidiness. Scurrying. Seeing all kinds of things that need to be done, but doing nothing.

Like Martha Stuart show – everything processed meticulously but ends up looking the same as everything else – “very vanilla.” Make things the same – undifferentiation – cancer. Strong cancer remedy.

Issues about talking and communicating.

Colors blue and orange come up strongly. Clothing, stool.

No tomorrow --- eat as much as you can.

Making connections across eons.

Sad and lonely, desire to be alone and not communicate.

Losing track of things, having things stolen, finding money, receiving money.

Redundant reiteration – repeating words and phrases.

Poems, meditations.

Dreams old boyfriends, male genitalia.

Dreams food, parties, dying at party.

Dreams about men in their childhood.

Dreams about shopping and clothing – exquisite clothing – everything has to be exquisite.

Dreams about stealing cars. Wanting material possessions very badly.

Dreams of animals: wolves, mice.

Dreams graveyards, corpses.

Dreams being tempted by the devil (very characteristic of this remedy).

Dreams people with no faces. (very cancerous – no distinguishing features. Comp brass)

Tumors on foot – lot in physical sx about plantar fasciitis, shoes.

Lots of headaches, sore eyes, circles under eyes. Belching, nausea. Diarrhea. Menses problematic. Chest very tight, lower back tight.

Strong craving for nuts.

Hypotensive after hot bath.

Cystitis, hypertension,.

Joint pains << rain coming on.

Color blindness.

Sinusitis.

Head sensation as if enlarged.

Achilles tendonitis. Neck pain from ear to shoulder.

Numbness, motor problems, dropping things.

Lack of focus – not able to multi-task.

Nausea.

Hormonal remedy – menopause, pregnancy. Menstrual problems.

Nosebleeds.

Pituitary problems.

Fungal eruptions.

Thyroid problems.
ORCHIDACEAE FAMILY IN GENERAL

Redeeming sensual materialism, excitement, and sleepless as if coffee.

Evocative – evoking emotions, sensualilty.

Helping others – codependency, helping others succeed materially while avoiding materialism themselves. (e.g. financial planning, madam, sex therapist, decorator…)

Style over substance.

Redeeming others’ materialism.

Sensuality and touch – experiencing the senses.

Living off the erotic needs of others.

Theme of living on air, avoiding deep contact with others.

Particular, fastidious, fussy.

In the material world but not completely of it. Material world has to be perfect (e.g. Martha Stuart – colors of everything have to match, etc…). However, no love underneath, lacking substance and connection with others, except through materialism or style.

Comp Ars; (very similar in particular to vanilla.)

Emotional vacancy or intensity. Autism – impelled to touch and experience the senses but internalized self-gratification. Impulse to touch, masturbation. All internalized, not expressed.

Animal-like – mimicking insect behavior. Sexual attractiveness. Parasitic quality. (Sol-p-t is a potato parasite – a bit like orchidaceae.) Lives off other people – not productive himself. Self-worth depends on how much they can get out of others.

Torn between heaven and earth. Between heaven and earth. Making heaven out of earth. (e.g. makeover shows.).

Complaints of head and brain; complaints of the feet. These predominate physically.

All the orchids have cerebral complaints, activity, injury. Fever affecting brain. Encephalitis.

Nervous system complaints.

Sleeplessness from inflammation or activity in brain.

Awareness and delusions concerning brain.

Sexuality – difficult, loss of erection. Orchid is Latin for testicle. Testicular problems, testicular cancer, vaginal problems.

Foot problems. Gout, dragging foot, foot drop. Heaviness of limbs. Broken feet from ballet or dance. (along with esthetic quality. Wound is that they’re forced to take on this esthetic that isn’t necessarily their own.)

Animal like qualilties. Attraction is important. (LK says that he’s prescribed snake venoms in some cases where orchidaceae have been needed.)
