toxic goitre?

Post by Shannon Nelson »

Can anyone share info on toxic goitre?
Trying to help a friend think about a case; she thinks it's hereditary, as
two others in the pt's family also have it.
Thanks,
Shannon

Dear Shannon

Toxic goiter is not a specific name of an allopathic disease. In allopathy we have TOXIC DIFFUSE GOITER (or Graves disease), TOXIC MULTYNODULLAR GOITER. Theses 2 name are so different and we call both of them TOXIC GOITER.

Toxic Diffuse Goiter (Graves) is an autoimmune disease, Genetic factors play an important role , but it is not completely hereditary. You can find some useful information about TOXIC DIFFUSE GOITER (or Graves' disease) at: http://www.medstudents.com.br/endoc/endoc5.htm

By the way, Is there any difference for your friend to know if it is hereditary or not? In both cases we have to look for simillimum according to the patient's symptoms.

Farbod

Hi Farbod,

Thanks for the information!
My friend says it is *not* Graves, so I suppose it must be the
"multinodular". Do you know what is thought to cause that?

Re genetic factors, I thought that might be significant in that, e.g., I
would think a strongly gene-based disorder would have different expectations
re cure vs. palliation, ease of cure, etc., compared to one with a different
etiology? And we are looking for information about what to expect when/if
the remedy is found (not my department at the moment).

Thanks for your thoughts,
Shannon

Dear Shannon
I can not comment on her diagnosis without any history. But commonly such problems are not unifactorial genetic disorderes. They are multifactorial. It means that genetic is only predisposing factor. Then according to what you said about treating genetic disorders this problem is not too hard to treat.
Remember that Graves disease can occure without any eye problem. If you have some more information about your cases , other listees may comment on it.

Farbod
