Mosquito Remedy & Bites

Post by Debra Lamana »

Hi Ellen,
I was curious about what makes mosquito bites itch, too, so I did a bit of reading and found out that when mosquitoes bite, they draw out blood while injecting some of their saliva. Their saliva contains an anticoagulant and proteins. The proteins are foreign substances that trigger the body’s immune system. To fight them, the body’s immune system releases histamine, a compound that helps white blood cells get to the affected area. Histamine is what causes the itchiness, inflammation, and swelling.
Perhaps the tape method you discovered eases the swelling from the bite, leading to less itch.
If you ever want to try something a bit more conventional in terms of an analgesic, Thayers sells a medicated witch hazel called 'Super Hazel' that contains a small amount of camphor and also aloe vera. It is very soothing for itchiness from bites. Now, if we can just get the little vampires to stop biting :) Deb L.

Hi Deb,
This is just my feeling. The tape does not seem to be soothing. You have to cover the bite soon after it starts. If you scratch it, then the tape is less effective. If you cover it quickly, then the itch never happens. Maybe when you cover it, it seems to itch a bit that is why you noticed it. But, that minor itch goes away quickly. Also, the swelling does not even start. If you noticed it after the swelling has started, still the tape will prevent the itch from increasing. Some people put nail polish on it. But that seems toxic to me, so I just use tape. Then, later when you sweat, some kinds of tape fall off and leaving a trail of tape which also is annoying. At least, by then the bug bite is no longer an issue.
In Japan, they have special tape to cover bug bites, but I think it is just a commercial gimmick.
Best,

I use a zapper which delivers a tiny electric current on the bite. I do it a few times when I first feel the bite and the swelling goes down and it stops itching. I get them on amazon and have one in every handbag!!
