Re: Opium use / Alcohol

Post by Soroush Ebrahimi »

A very senior colleague has said that those who use opium cannot stand
alcohol.

Does anyone else have any similar experience?

Op at 6x was also proposed for those with an alcohol problem!

Hi Soroush,

I'm not clear on your question.

If you're saying that (for instance) chronic opium-smokers won't jump at the
chance to drink a half-bottle of whiskey, I'd say you'd be very mistaken. I
have known a number of heroin users and a few opium eaters/smokers, NONE of
whom had anything but most fervent desire when confronted with opportunity
to consume alcohol.

Perhaps the colleague's meaning would have been relating to a *recovering*
opium addict (?) -in which case, positively no alcohol should be used
(trace amounts used in remedy preparation excepted, but no alcohol should be
used as preservative of medicinal solution) -as any mood-altering substance
will undermine the recovery process.

One other scenario presents itself... there is a potential for synergystic
effects in the use of many 'recreational' drugs.. and it seems that one's
"tolerance" (amount of a given drug needed to produce a desireable 'high')
may be affected somewhat radically and unpredictably by such synergism...
though 'seasoned' addicts are generally well aware of, and actually
consciously seek these synergisms as cost-cutting means of reaching their
little moments of relative freedom from the various & sundry pains which
they are driven to self-medicate against..

best,
Dave Hartley

Opium use / Alcohol

Post by debslam »

--- i have asked my friend who used to use opium as well (see post
opiate addiction) he said that he didn´t like alcohol. it was a
little difficult getting an answer out of him (typical nux ;) )
eventually he said he didn´t like alcohol because he would feel
terrible for two days afterwards. he said that if you are not used
to alcohol, any one would feel hungover. from the opium users he
remembers, MOST wouldn´t drink alcohol because there was no point,
both bring you down. there were however some who did drink but they
were usually extreme drug users who needed an extra "kick". with
other narcotics such as cocaine, alcohol drinking was more
common. pure opium smoking is not so common in europe. he said
that heroin gives the same effects and people didn´t really drink
alcohol with heroine either. i think there is truth in what your
colleague said but it is also a bit of a generalisation. hope this
helps. deb
