So, here it is --the confusion!

The confusion originates from the well intentioned but ignorant prescription of Arnica by some surgeons, especially plastic surgeons, who absolutely need to diminish any possible swelling, bleeding and bruising after surgery.

So they were prescribing something like: "take 3 globules of Arnica 30 (or 200) 3x/day for 10 days before surgery"...you can imagine that THAT one created a few provings with dramatic results on the outcome of surgery, followed by a stern warning that those pills that contain nothing and are utterly useless can cause huge damage...free sarcasm included.

A single dose before surgery has almost constantly reduced the amount of oozing and post operative bruising...then Arnica as needed by the patient's sensation and the aspect of the wound, not by protocol.

Makes sense?

Now that makes a lot more sense. What would be the usual single-dose potency choice (or range) for the situation?
(Yes I know “It depends…” I mean generally speaking, in context of all the usual considerations.)

The dentist whose lectures I am listening to says 1 dose before surgery. He should know. He uses it all the time.

I think that the idea behind the prohibition before surgery (Vithoulkas said that among others) is that Arnica is a blood thinner. So, theoretically, it can promote bleeding. Like Dr. Roz says, it would take a lot of Arnica, to thin the blood so much that it promotes bleeding. After the surgery, you are going to use Arnica frequently, because you want all those signals that the blood has to start building capillaries and other tissues. A bit thinner blood will get into the capillaries, I would think. The blood will carry the clotting factors so, bleeding is not such a big issue. Just imagination though. Does that make physiological sense Dr. Roz? After the surgery, she will use up the Arnica quickly so it is ok to sip it as needed, I believe. After things have calmed down and she is still trying to heal the wound, no more than 3-4 times a day. 200c before the surgery if you have it, and right after. Later 30c. Those would be my instructions.
He uses Arnica and Hypericum in alteration when he has a situation that is too pressing to differentiate between the two.
I have a patient who was recovering from Surgery. Being a bit unsure, I said Rhus-tox for restlessness and Calendula for a cut muscle in alteration. The next day the burning of the cut area and numbness brought me to say Calendula only. It seemed to me that one would be better. Does that make sense? Of course, Tanya's daughter is not going to be asking for help. But still, I would like help with the thought process.

Excellent Ellen. Daughter will follow direction to the best she is able. Will be having a nursing service come in the first few days and she

is nervous about taking remedies in front of the nurse due to reportage to the insurance company. So a little tricky. I think keeping a
liquid solution of the arnica next to the bed will be more subtle.
