I've been reading an interesting book called : "Bed Number Ten" by Sue
Baier and Mary Zimmeth Schomaker. It's the biography of Sue Baier who
went through, and is still recovering from Guillain-Barr Syndrome.
Until reading this book, although reading questions from other posters
on different lists, I had not ever realized what this was, or how it
affected a person.
This disease is basically from a Viral infection, if I understand it
right, and causes total paralasis of the body, leaving mental awareness
intact. In Sue's case, she could only move her eyes. This allowed for
very limited communication, with blinking.
She was in the hospital for 10 months, and then sent home with private
nurses and physical therapists, to continue to recover. She had a Trach
tube for breathing, a feeding tube for feeding, as she couldn't swallow
on her own. She had IV's for fluids and antibiotics, etc.... which some
of the time was in the form of a heprin lock, as her veins had
collapsed, and couldn't replace IV's without this.
As I was reading, the emotions and pain she went though, from "some"
uncaring "professionals", as well as the shut off feeling of not being
able to communicate needs, and the unaware nursing staff with regards to
proper training of suctioning, reading and comprehending charts,
duplication of proceedures due to noncommunication between physicians,
and insensitivity to modesty with regard to leaving to "chat", while
leaving her uncovered for extended periods of time..... I was truely
sympathetic.
I was left questioning:
If an alternative approach was taken, what would the options, and
outcome be?
This disease attacks the Myelin Sheath, like so many nerve conditions.
Would similar proceedures, and modalities work well for this as for
say, Multiple Sclerosis, Polio, Parkenson's???
Would Phosphorus, in homeopahtic dilutions, and variations (Nat., Kali.,
etc) as well as Hypercum, help? What about St. John's wort herbs and
Essential Oils for Massage? Would these have helped stop the
inflamation / infection, and begin healing faster?
Rife Frequencies, Sound Therapy, Color Therapy, Laser Therapy,
Acupunture..... Would these have stopped the progress and began
stimulating healing more quickly? The main problem was that this sets
in so quickly, within 24 hours.... As it is rare, it takes a while for
Mainstream medicine to figure out what's wrong, and begin to address it.
The length of time a person is down with it, causes muscles to atrophe,
foot drop to occur, calcium deposits in joints to build up, etc... which
all have to be addressed with physical therapy later.
So many questions..... Any thoughts?

Guillian Barr Syndrome
Re: Guillian Barr Syndrome
Dear Jennifer,
Guillain-Barre syndrome is often associated with the after effects of the
'flu vaccine.
If this is the case it puts a slightly different slant on individual cases.
From a more general analysis of the disease symptoms I would also add some
of the acids to your research.
Best wishes, Joy

Lots of ideas ..... for sure ...
and all or any of them *might* be of support in some given
case -
yet, rather than speculating on the multitude of potential
treatment possibilities and hoping to pick and choose the
right one, it would be appropriate to let oneself be guided
by the actual symptoms of the case -
example (not the best example in regards symptoms, but the
only case I've got
:
female, age approximately 27, suddenly developed just those
symptoms of Guillain Barre Syndrome - (in retrospect it was
'determined' that it was due to a scratch she acquired on
her leg and which got a little infected) - in hospital soon
enough, confirmed the disease name - in the meantime had
received a single dose of Conium maculatum, which I chose
solely on the
'pathological/clinical' manifestation of the characteristic
'ascending paralysis' along with the numbness of both
physical sensation and mental faculty, as I perceived
neither physical nor mental other symptoms of note in this
otherwise always cheerful, lively, and kind lady -
Another couple of doses over the next 10 days, no more -
of course, being in the hospital and it being a potentially
serious condition, she still went through the usual
blood-washing/filtering procedure - still, the nurses and
doctor expressed their astonishment at this patient's
well-being and level of energy throughout - (she was with
two other current patients of same condition in the room,
and those certainly were not the first in the hospital) -
his actual words, literally, were:
" ... I don't understand ... she shouldn't be healing so
fast ... ?!?!? '
There are other remedies of potential value in cases of
other kinds of so-called 'Guillain Barre Syndrome', for
sure - the symptoms will be the guide -
All other therapies and approaches may or may not be of
value in any given individual case -
always needs to be decided in each case anew -

Re: Guillian Barr Syndrome
Dear Jennifer Ruby
GB. syndrom is so different from MS or Parkinson. We may count it as an acute exacerbation of psora. It will progress to such a degree only in few cases. In many other cases the symptoms will subside during few days or weeks. The paralysis is not permanent( in many cases). The most important characteristic symptom in cases of this syndrom is upgoing paralysis. Your choice remedies are not very wide range.
G: Paralusis-extending to- upward: agar, ars, bar-c, con, hydr-ac,kali-c, karw-h, lyss,mang, phos, plb, sulfon

Re: Guillian Barr Syndrome
Hi, Ruby --
An acquaintance of mine treated her daughter's Guillan-Barre successfully with Curare, which, in the case described in the book you've been reading, sounds like quite an appropriate remedy.
Peace,
Cinnabar
