thyroid condition at 67.....

Post by Carol Orr »

My husband has been through the ringer with his by pass operation in his leg
and continuing nerve pain in his leg. Then he cut his tendon in his finger
with a razor blade. He wrenched his back carrying out something heavy to the
garbage and told the doctor he was tired all the time and gaining weight. He
is 67 years old. He has been 119 pounds his whole life. He has always been an
extremely hard worker and he never ate a lot of food. Doctor gave him a
thyroid test and his TSH is 9.8 and 9.7 the next week. He has gained 15 pounds
in the last month and none of his clothes fit him. His stomach gets fatter and
fatter every few days. He still doesn't eat very much food and he started
itching on his arms and scratching till he cuts the skin and has little sores.
He had this 35 years ago on his legs and I think the doctor gave him med and
it went away. I gave him 1 m arsenicum about 6 weeks ago. His personality
went through a dramatic change. Maybe because I had to go to work and he sits
or sleeps all day and isn't working hard anymore. He is amorous and
affectionate and says really sweet things to me. I feel like I'm living with a
really nice stranger. He will go into a bad mood and come out of it quickly
instead of weeks or months later. He has been telling me for years that he
feels shattered(he is British). Maybe he has had this thyroid issue for a long
time but this is the first time in his life that he has gained weight...and so
much so quickly. I bought him some selenium and started giving him one mcg
tablet 15 minutes ago. He won't see his primary doctor for another week and
then he'll probably send him to thyroid specialist..so he won't be seeing
anyone any time soon. I looked up remedies that are amorous and lyc and nux
and lach come up a lot...but only psor and sul for itching in bed. ..but a lot
of his problems start when he is sleeping and I did give him lachesis 200c in
the eighties because of the weird contortions he would be in when taking a
nap and the nasty mood he would be in when waking from the nap and both those
things stopped after that remedy. His legs would be on the floor and the
upper part of his body would be sort of half on his side on the couch. Unless
someone has a bright idea or ideas...I may be forced to send him to the
homeopathic school to see hopefully one of the teachers.

Hi Carol,

TSH scale is currently 0.4-4.50. Are you sure the numbers you have been given are correct?

Ars 1M six weeks ago...........Ars is said to ave a 60 -90 day duration.

Personality, dramatic change. Personality change in relation to the remedy and/or being home alone all day?

"He feels shattered" is this "return of old symptom"?

"Itching and scratching" is this "return of old symptom"? If so, it is not in the direction of cure.

Maybe the affectionate guy is glad to see you after being home alone all day. Any chance he's "lonesome eating" while you're not home?

Atb,

Leilanae

Did the weight gain begin suddenly just one month ago, or had it started before that?

Could it be that Arsenicum is a / the remedy that he's needed chronically, and this "stranger" is the sweet self that's been lurking underneath the anxiety, control, and etc.?
One thing it reminds me of is a long-ago "cat story". I had a sweet little cat who'd apparently been terrorized either from birth or from very early (or maybe he was just born that way), and also while growing up was terrorized (snuck up on and viciously attacked while he slept amid the grapevines) regularly by a big tom (his father? mom had abandoned this guy and his sister as infants).
So as he grew up in our yard, I kept thinking he seemed like a "textbook stramonium" -- scared of everything, and of everyone except for me. But I didn't give it to him, just kept "thinking about it."
Then there was an episode where (long story short) he badly and obviously needed it, after getting himself nearly killed in a fight). I snuck it into his water dish, and by the next day he was back on the porch, smiling and purring, making friends with *everybody* -- now a "textbook Pulsatilla" (which, I read, is often the layer underneath stramonum).
I wonder if something like this might be the case for your husband -- but that doesn't address the thyroid matter.
What do you find as far as remedies that "follow well" or complement Arsenicum? Any that have thyroid issues, weight gain?
Shannon
