96 year old woman broke the 11th and 12th rib

Post by Carol Orr »

Lady tripped over some luggage at her cabin. Still up there for another week.
"I only have pain when I breath". Her daughter said the pain goes around her
side from her belly button to the back and that there is a sharp pointy point
at the end of the 11th rib. Daughter called the 11th and 12th ribs as
floating. She will come back to town in a week. Anyone have any ideas for
remedies. Daughter mentioned some ligaments...I have no idea what you would
give anyone in a situation like this. I'm going to google it and see what I
come up with. She is having a second set of x-rays today.

Consider Symphytum which will heal the bones quickly but it will not move them back to normal position if they are out of place. Try a 6C, 12C, or 30C depending on how strong she is. If weak, use the lowest potencies dissolved in chlorine free water. If strong and energetic, use the higher potencies - in water or as pills. The bones will heal in the position they are in. Calc Phos 6C, to be repeated several times per day for a week or more will also help greatly. As she is 96 she probably has weak bones anyway and the Calc Phos will help to firm up those bones.
Always be careful with the potencies when dealing with a very old person as too much potency especially in the 200C range can actually kill a weak, old person.

She’s probably cracked her ribs which is painful so Symphytum to heal. Also if she needs to keep still because it hurts to breath I suggest Bryonia. (Arnica to begin with naturally)

I did this to myself a few years back (took a misstep off a ladder and fell into some windows I was preparing to hang). In my case, the symptoms changed, and what started out responding to Arnica, Bryonia, etc., eventually needed Ranunculus-bulb.
There are no good rubrics around for cracked or fractured ribs, but looking at intercostal pain will give you some ideas for other possibilities.
I also found it was good to take a nap in the afternoon, because remaining vertical put too much of a strain on the muscles, leading to spasm.
Peace,
Dale

You would not need any rubrics for cracked ribs specifically. Just use something related to bones as all remedy reaction would be the same for any bone. I think the Arnica suggestion would be the best to start with, followed by Symphytum, and then Calc Phos. If there is muscle soreness, I would use Rhus Tox or Bryonia - depending on the modalities. The Arnica should be first because that might relieve the majority of the pain and you might not even need the Rhus Tox.
I am treating a 78 year old woman for a cracked femur and did it just as I described above. I gave the Arnica for use in the morning until no longer needed, with Symphytum to be taken in the early afternoon, and Rhus Tox to be taken before bed. Once the Arnica was no longer needed as the swelling reduced after a number of days, I replaced it with Calc Phos and when the muscles were no longer sore and painful, I stopped the Rhus Tox. She will quit the Symphytum shortly as the bone was shown to be almost completely healed on x-ray and will continue with the Calc Phos at ever increasing intervals to build up her bones.

She was walking after less than 3 weeks albeit rather gingerly at first but much better now after a month. The doctors told her that she could walk after 2 months and they cannot figure out how she could have healed so quickly especially at her age. I happened to be there when a physical therapist stopped by and after watching her go through all the things she felt obligated to do, I mentioned to her that I had given the woman homeopathy. She looked at me like I was crazy and I realized that I had another case that needed treatment - for ignorance and an arrogant unwillingness to examine the evidence and do an honest evaluation. I just turned away, however, and let her go her own way, secure in the belief that I was a poor, deluded fool and that she was at the forefront of the healing wave.

Bryonia first and foremost.

Allen,

Some "thoughts" are better left unsaid. (Including this one.)

If you're having an aggravation maybe someone can suggest an antidote.

Give Rannunculus - b 30 for about three days, Then no medicine for two days. Follow that with symphythum 30 for about five days.

Best regards

No, you don't need rubrics for cracked ribs -- and there are none. [There is a rubric in MacRep for chest injuries, which lists 21 remdies; subrubrics, however, deal only with lungs or breasts, not ribs.]
In my experience the usual remedies for fractures/bone injuries did not do the job. Yes, they were needed initially to promote healing, but they didn't help later with the pain. Actea spicata did (like Bryonia, it's worse from any motion). Also helpful were a heating pad (to relax the muscles) and doses of chelated magnesium (to allay spasms). Ruta helped for awhile, and Ran-b. did the trick for the ensuing weeks. Most helpful of all was realizing that, remedies notwithstanding, I couldn't carry on as usual but needed to rest and allow my body to heal.
Peace,
Dale
