Dear Wendy,

I find the possibility of TV addiction due to cathode ray tube a intriging theory,
Wonder if this applies to computer addiction also? If the major causes of TV addiction is
caused by the gases, will it cure the TV addict by giving him/her a plasma TV? :-)

Time to buy a new TV :-P

Almost a TV addict,
TC

Interesting -- not an addiction I've considered before. TV always seems a
bit indefinable in its variety - a bit like white noise. However, for those
that can sit and watch anything and everything for hours on end, then I'd
start to think about the contents of the cathode ray tube - the inert gases
(argon, krypton), particularly since the state of the person watching is
bordering on complete inertia.

If only!

But there's an important point here. The TV addiction isn't *caused* by the
inert gases in the CRT.

What I was postulating is essentially this. The potential TV addict is
already in the dis-ease state that has similarities to the nature of the
inert gases. His vital force is seeking its simillimum. His TV addiction is
only one of many symptoms calling out for the remedy. He's attracted to the
TV because he's attracted to his simillimum. If you change the TV to a
plasma one, he may possibly lose some interest in the TV, but it won't
"cure" him.

Perhaps his symptoms are being exacerbated by spending all day in a room lit
by banks of fluorescent lights. But this is also not a "cause"; only a
symptom of the state. Changing the environment may lead to a diminution of
the symptoms, but it doesn't address the susceptibility to the state.

Regards
Wendy

Thanks, Wendy. It's a fascinating slant.

I was thinking of drug remedies for the passivity and abnegation of responsibility, but maybe we should work on refining this. How about Cannibis for addiction to sit-coms (like the laugh-track, everything is hilarious) and Stramonium for addiction to Westerns and spy thrillers (everything is black or white)? Any other contributions? ;>)

Peace,
Cinnabar
