Wondering if anyone can give me some pointers regarding non union of fractures
The person had his leg crushed by a large concrete pylon that fell on him
Multiple complex fractures some compound (ie throught the skin)
Plated pinned etc – now not healing or forming a proper callous
He has been plagued by gout since the accident (he has a history of gout but we had it under control with constitutional remedy and acutes till then)
He has responded to the usual remedies for his gout though it seems to return more quickly and of course he is pretty upset about th changes it has wrought upon his life – he is a builder and they have told him he will likely have to retire. Not a person who will hand the reigns over easily to his son.
He does well on Calc carb and Lycopodium at times
Acutes: Bell, Colch, Pulsatilla Rhus tox and occasional doses of Thuja and Tub as indicated at the time.
He is a big man and has trouble keeping his weight under control
We have given Symphytum 6C and then 30C
Tissue salts – Calc phos, Calc Fluor, Nat Phos and Silica
It has been 4 months now and last Xrays have shown that fractures are not healing as they should??
Open to nay suggestions please Regards Pauline

Hi Pauline,
If you look in Boericke – Thyroidinum you will find a sentence in non union of fractures. It will certainly be worth a try!!

Re: non union of fractures
I would first question the quality of the surgery:
- edges of the fractured bone not sufficiently approximated: you need a slight degree of compression between the edges, if the gap is too wide, the callus will not form.
- interposition of soft tissues (muscles or tendons) between the fractured pieces = obstacle to callus formation.
If it was my leg, I would ask for a surgical revision of the area... then Symphytum, Calc Phos, vitamin C for collagen formation, Vitamin D3 + K2.

I was a herbalist before being a homeopath. Symphytum herbal tea has never failed. Offers enough calcium and repair components to speed healing 3 times faster than normal. Now I back it up with Calc phos tissue salts and Symphytum in potency.

Re: non union of fractures
Hi Pauline,
One approach that I have sometimes found useful is to consider, if the physical part (the non-union of fractures) part were not present, what remedies might you be considering, based solely on his mentals and generals? Cast a wide net from that framework, and then among those remedies, see which ones are also mentioned under fracture-related rubrics. If I find one that seems well suited to the person, esp. the mentals and generals, but I don't see it in e.g. "fracture" rubrics, I would probably begin with it anyway, and see whether some general "stress relief" (relief to the mentals etc.) would free up physical healing. Sometimes it works!

Hi Pauline,
Usually when one or two locally acting remedies fail you will need to go for a constitutional remedy. I can alo add that Ruta and thyroidinum are two other options if you want to still try locally acting remedies.
For gout the best remedy (if not giving constitutrional) is lithium benz 30 or lithium brom 30. I have never seem them fail. (every time I say that about a remedy I get a patient where the remedy fails!).
best regards
Elham

Re: non union of fractures
27 years ago, an office colleague who had broken her tibia was simply not healing.
After being re-casted for a third time, her orthopedic doctor FINALLY thought to ask her about beverages...
“Oh, yes, I drink a Coca-cola or two every day.”
He told her to quit immediately – she could drink a small amount of green tea for “withdrawal headaches.”
5 weeks later, the Xray showed wonderful healing.
Do ask your patient about his daily diet!
