Joy,
thanks for your support. i totally agree with you. i had another child
several years ago with this fear. in both cases the children have been
separated from their mothers. in both cases there was abuse. in the
first case the child was put with his aunt. in this case the child was
removed from the home several times by age 4 and has been in several
different homes. she has lots of fears including fear of being alone; fear
of abandonment; fear of telling her feelings. she is very sweet, compliant
and affectionate and often behaves this way to ensure being accepted.
she is frightened of disharmony. this weekend she was here with her
guardian, who is my daughter and she expressed this fear of being
kidnapped by us. i think she was feeling that she was being taken over.
this may be connected to a fantasy of hers that she will live with her
mother again. based on this and other manifestations, i think she is
trying very hard to not be subsumed by another family or other
reality. it's as if she is saving herself for returning to her birth family or that
she feels she is betraying them in some way. there is great anxiety about
hurting others, especially her mother's feelings she resists meaningful
involvement with other people and winds up connecting with things.
i am trying to use rubrics of estrangement to incorporate this particular
aspect of the case. and of course fear of abandonment. at the moment
carc and puls are showing strongly.

Dear Tanya, i think it is best to ask the child why she has this fear,
explore it further because it could be a chosen metaphor for another
underlying fear that is more succinct. If you feel it really has to be
taken at face value then fear of being kidnapped = fear of being
attacked, abandoned, being alone, others approaching him, being
arrested, that someone is behind him, of being censured, being punished
- so many really. Best wishes, Joy
