This brings up an occasion for me to ask people just how central the sexual aspect of Hyos is and how it has manifested, in their experience.

I've had Hyos work well once in a case where the person was obsessed by the fact that he had trouble getting girlfriends -- he felt left out, and was certain that no girl would ever find him attractive enough to actually have sex with him. He was't a virgin -- some girls had, in fact, had sex with him, but he didn't have a current girlfriend, and felt depressed.

I've had several other cases (not this current one with the headaches and feeling of dissolving, although I did look at Stramonium for her) where I've considered it seriously, but didn't use it because there were absolutely no sexual issues in the case. The other remedies I gave worked, so it wasn't an issue, ultimately. But I've always wondered. In making a differential between Belladonna, Hyos, and Stram, I've always assumed that there should be some sexual issue strongly represented in the case for Hyos. So for me, anyway, it would be useful to get a sense from others on the list about how they've experienced this aspect of Hyos in their cases.

YEs I think we tend to get a little side-tracked by sexual issues in
Hyoscyamus and may not consider it otherwise. Also there needs to be a
depth of understnaidng peole with sexual issues or problems that are
so common today - all of them do not require Hyos, even though they
seem to have some concerns of being looked at or some amount of
shamelessness. Also Hyos can be just a transient phase during a
chronic case.
Sexual issues are a symptom of much deeper problems and most of the
problems in Hyos stem from either disappointemnt in love or
abandonment. Actually isntead of a sexual issue, I'd rather look for
Jealousy to confirm a prescription of Hyos or else a strong sense of
persecution or being wronged.

I gave Hyos once to a young girl who was grieving over her mothers
recent death. What she said was that apart from her own grief she was
jealous that everyone seemed to be more concerned about her little
brother. HE cheif complaint was a severe headache. No sexual issues here!

I think if you've read Zaren's descriptions of Hyos in the ZZ section
of Ref Works - there is a confusion and overlap of LAchesis
expression (which is more overtly sexual) in that description even
though it is very good. So reading that description may cause some
amount of prejudice about Hyos prescriptions.

You case has the choking sensation which is a physical confirmatory.
BEsides an almost Obscessive recall of what she suffered as a child -
being abandoned in an Indian School.
In India, Hyos has 2 main indications for Hyos (most homeoatphs don't
go into detialed life history, mental symptoms, and almost NEVER into
sexual issues) is Dry COUGH < NIGHT < lying, < eating/talking on going
to sleep, and/or disappointment in love.

Dear Rosemary, it always makes for good learning to compare a number of
rx within the same group or those that have similarities within their
sx pictures and, of course, Belladonna, Hyoscyamus and Stramonium are
all in the same group - solanacaea - and as with our comparisons of
some of the mineral groups I would look at these 3 rx in a vertical
line with Belladonna at the top, Hyos in the middle and Stram at the
bottom, getting heavier and more intense as you move downwards.

In that sense 'wildness', 'fear', 'rage', 'violence' will be seen in
all these rx but each will have their own causative factors even though
the common theme of 'threat' is vital to them all. With that in mind I
would say that the 'sexual' nature of Hyos is central to the
understanding of this rx mainly because it is related to jealousy that
then leads on the rage. In other words the causation is of a sexual
nature that leads to the jealousy and the jealousy might be in more
evidence than the sexuality behind it.

In Belladonna the 'threat' often comes in the guise of pain; and in
Stramonium it is terror - so in the vertical line you have:-

intense pain
sexual jealousy
terror

all the time getting more and more intense as you move deeper into
these rx. I've only had a couple of cases needing Hyos but the sexual
jealousy has always been there.

Hi Rosemary,
I'm thinking of a nice hyos case I read--where???--that did not
involved any sexual aspect. The patient was an elderly woman, who was
I think a Muslim, so it's not surprising that wasn't talked about--the
prescription was based on (hope I'm remembering right) a few things:
one was "loquacity" in the form of frequent, long epistles to the
homeopath! In her appointment she said very little ("hiding"), but
would send every few days another loooooong letter detailing her
history and concerns and so on. Also something around forsaken,
feeling ill-used or abandoned, or something similar.

Also, there's a nice write-up at hypathy (below). Some remedies have
both a very extreme picture, which may be the one that is more commonly
known, but *not* everyone needing the remedy will present such an
extreme degree of the pathology. Besides hyos, some others I've
realized this about include Lyssin, Stramonium, and I'm sure there are
many more!

So in the case of hyos, maybe a desire to (in some way) shock people,
perhaps subtly, is a more reliable clue? And I'm not sure that even
this *needs* to be present; I'm still working on understanding that!

Hyoscyamus (Hyos.) is a very interesting and intriguing remedy, which
has many subtle presentations beyond the caricatures often described in
books. It's a remedy with some common mental and emotional themes
running through all its various expressions. Along with the clearly
provocative characteristics of Hyoscyamus, we want to perceive its
indications in less obvious situations, where the person has learned to
compensate the expression of their state.

One description which fits Hyoscyamus is 'any attention is better than
no attention'. Attention-seeking behavior through verbal or sexual
provocation is a well-known feature of this remedy, and behaviors can
be quite dramatic (lewdness, shameless, wanting to be naked, singing
obsene songs, etc.). But these tendencies are extreme examples of the
Hyoscyamus state, and such clear indications are not often seen in
practice. From a deeper perspective, what would predispose someone to
behave in this manner, and how might the expression of that state be
less apparent?

One common etiology of the Hyoscyamus state is emotional neglect in
childhood (delusion, deserted, forsaken). This stress leads to
adaptation in the will to have one's emotional needs met. The
Hyoscyamus person can gain attention by shocking, annoying or
provocative speech and behavior (inciting others, mocking, mania to
ridicule, disposition to contradict, desire to fight). Hyoscyamus
individuals may tell risque jokes or act like 'clowns' (jesting), and
although not listed in the books, some Hyoscyamus individuals describe
an attraction to, dislike or fear of clowns. The desire for attention
leads some to behave like chameleons when in company, but these
multiple personas undermine a truer sense of self-identity, as the
desire for attention distracts them (and those in their company!). The
sense of self-esteem or self-worth is often very low, and Hyoscyamus
individuals may feel a strong sense of guilt (anxiety of conscience,
delusion that he is a criminal, self-reproach).

stressful situation that was! I'm glad it all came to such good terms thanks
