Well Homeopaths and Healers--I have another case that I was hoping you could
help me brainstorm on . It is bigger than me- and I would love to help
prolong this man's life. My prayer is that this disease does not become an
epidemic anywhere--although there may be evidence that a significant percentage of
Alzheimers deaths are actually Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease.

My patient, a white male, age 62, previously in good health, has been told
that he has "Mad Cow Disease" --Transmissible Spongiform Encephalitis or
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease --and has prions in his blood (a sign of the disease) and a
gray spot on his brain when MRI was done. He had gone to a very "prestigious
" medical hospital just one month ago for an annual physical- (after an
episode of confusion) and they found this plus an encapsulated 9cm. tumor in his
left kidney. They think there may be a link between the two problems. The
"prestigious" hospital refused to do the surgery on the kidney because they don't
know if "mad cow" prions are contagious etc. The family found another
hospital that removed the man's kidney. He has recovered well from the surgery
just 10 days ago.

They are giving this man 2-7 months to live. They offer no meds or
treatment. He is losing his short term memory rapidly which confuses and frustrates
him. He was a financial advisor and has stopped work. He has lost about 25%
of his mental abilities. He has lost sense of time, walks hunched over,
looks vacant and haunted and carries his arms in front of him like a ghost. Can
become agitated when confused and teary eyed when looking at his son and
grandson. Must be directed in his daily activities.

I know that the similar remedy is always best and I have started him on
Syphilinum 1M daily for a few days. I am considering referring him to docs that
do IV mega-vitamins etc.

What next homeopathically? Herbally? I would appreciate any help on this.
I know this is not the usual way of dealing with a homeopathic case but time
is of the essence.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare, fatal degenerative brain disease
in humans. CJD is a member of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy
(TSE) neurological disease family, which also includes bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) in cattle, scrapie in sheep, and Chronic
Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer and elk. Other human TSE diseases include kuru,
Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker Disease and Fatal Familial Insomnia. All TSE diseases
are believed to be caused by the abnormal form of a widely-conserved
mammalian protein called the prion protein.

For what it's worth I have always thought that Argentum nitricum would
be useful in CJD and it might also be worth looking at the Cuprum
group, especially Cuprum ars with the kidneys being involved. Apart
from that and needing to be sure of the diagnosis (and yet putting it
to one side as well because we don't prescribe on dx but sx) you have
to take the whole case and examine the characteristic sx of this
individual. Without more information it is difficult to offer other

Call a illness Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease only give us the less important symptoms to make a prescription. There are about 100 medicines who could help (and will pitfall if given), but there's only one who will save o cure. Please, you will need to be more specific if you really wish to help wit homeopathy. I will need characteristic symptoms to send you a valuable advise.

Hi-
This is a condition with which most of us do not have direct
experience. As usual, individualizing symptoms should guide. But in
many conditions such as this , as in AIDS, it will be difficult to
separate the disease symptoms from the individuals because the
disease is so pervasive.

For a medicine that covers the pathology – the approach that I take
is refer to what the differential diagnoses is for the condition –
what are the other conditions that look similar to this that could
confuse a physician in making a diagnosis. This would give me a list
of similar pathological conditions ( for some of which we might have
some pointers) and some chemicals or metabolic substances that
closely resemble the disease in question in symptomatology.

Using that approach, since it is so confused with other dementias,
dementia is the group I would look for first. Our repertories all
full of ( example Boericke) indications for Dementia, Paralysis
Agitans etc.

Another group is Neurosyphilis. You have given Syphilinum, which is
good. Boericke and other works have references for Tertiary Syphilis
which might be a starting point.

Further Heavy metals, Alcohol, Lithium, Bismuth have been given in
DD for CJD. All of this is from Harrison's Internal Medicine ( since
I have been jumped upon for making unsubstantiated guesses in the
past.). Lithium chlor. reads well. Aurum salts look good. Aurum iod
and Aurum sulph look promising. I have tried Aurum.sulph previously
for Parkinson ( was not effective in my case). Considering that the
patient cries on seeing his son and grandson might want to consider
this. ( Also ask him why he cries. The answer could be a pointer).

Finally this disease leads to cerebral atrophy. Fluoric acid is
given for both cerebral atrophy and tertiary syphilis. I have used
it successfully in a stroke patient ( aged 66) who was keen on sex –
( Arnica and Flouric acid). Kali iod also is mentioned in this.
Hippozaenium could be referred to which has a lot of brain tubercles
and abscesses and is indicated for TB, Syphilis, Cancer etc.

And the approach should be still to find out some characteristic
modalities if possible. I would also enquire the patient about other
physical problems, change in food habits if any, sleep patterns and
other items generally not affected by CJD and choose a medicine from
that.

From what you have written about anxiety with confusion, weeping and
depression etc. Phos. Acid occurs frequently. Anxiety with confusion
and cloudiness – Phos.acid;
Weak memory with brain fag – Phos.acid;,Brooding over one's
condition – phos.acid;
Over all I saw Phos, Phos,acid, Calc. phos, Kali-iod, Mez, Aurum
salts occurring frequently.Lach, Bufo and Anac also occur
frequently. Lach and Medorrhinum have time distortions. Kali.iod has
both the brain and kidney manifestations.
