1713 a greek doctor, E. Timoni, wrote the first report about vaccination
with smallpox: 'Historia variolarum,. quae per insitionem excitantur'.

At the end of the 17th century in Constantinopel the word had already
been spread that moslemic slaveholders had used the smallpox-inoculation
successfully for a longer time.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu , wife of the English legate/ambassador, got
to know the process of inoculation and fervently advocated it in a
letter to England, and even let her 5 year old son get vaccinated in
1718.

Just to add to Gaby's post, this, from my work on the history of women
in medicine

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, writing from Turkey in 1735 "I am going to
tell you a thing which will make you wish yourself here. the smallpox
so fatal and general amongst us, is here entirely harmless by the
invention of engrafting which is the term they give it. There is a set
of old women, who make it their business to perform the operation every
autumn, in the month of september, when the great heat was abated.
People s end to one another to know if any of their family has a mind
to have the smallpox; they make parties for this purpose and when they
are met, commonly 15 or 16 together, the old women comes with a
nutshell full of the matter of the best sort of smallpox and she asks
what vein you please to have opened. She immediately rips open the vein
you offer her with a large needle and puts into the vein as much matter
as can lie upon the head of her needle, after that she binds up the
little wound with a hollow bit of the shell. there is no example of
anyone who has died of it."

Jenner made the connection between cowpox and smallpox in the late
18thC.
