Minutus

Hi,
I saw a new patient today who is due to undergo surgery in several days. She has taken Arnica previously for surgery and it has been helpful. In terms of the case itself, at present the remedy I want to give her is Staph.
However, I'm not sure whether to give her the Staph now and over the surgery, whether to give her the Staph and then Arnica over the surgery or whether to just wait for the surgery, give her Arnica for the surgery which has definitely helped in the past, and only afterwards start in with the Staph.
The fact that Staph is also a first aid remedy for surgery has made me consider giving it and going with it - on the other hand, there may not be sufficient time before surgery to determine whether Staph is the best constitutional remedy. My tendency is to go with the option of waiting for the surgery, giving her Arnica, and then Staph, but I'm not sure whether that's playing safe or being cowardly! Interestingly enough, the Arnica also showed up through a lot of her symptoms. (Sorry, I can't post more info.)
Any ideas?

I have seen and then have used then together, that is, alternate Staph,
then Arnica, then Staph, etc OR even take then at the same time. I
recall one professor refering to Staph as the homeopathic scapel. The
cases that I have seen have only has positive results. I would use them
both leading up to and recovering from the surgery.

One advantage that I find to *not* alternating "routinely", but instead
using each "as indicated", is that you get to *see* what each remedy is
doing, and you get to *know* when you need it / them, and when you
don't. I find this *so* much preferrable to any sort of routine
dosing, and have never found it hard for patients to learn to use.

Since staph is often indicated after surgery, and you feel that staph
is indicated for her constitutionally anyway, I'd be inclined to begin
with staph--probably a single high potency dose (200c?) as soon as
feasible after surgery (I just feel there are fewer variables to
contend with if you give it after, rather than before). When she first
wakes up, she should be comfortable from the anaesthetic used in

a dose of arnica 200c. I wonder whether a low potency would also work
for this situation... But so far, I have seen better results from high
potencies for bad injury (or surgery), so that would be my first
suggestion. My experience has been that a first-aid remedy for
traumatic or acute pain will act *very* quickly, maybe five minutes at
most, so if she takes the remedy once discomfort has just *begun* to
return, there won't be any suffering involved, and the feeling of the
remedy suddenly "kicking in" is really marvelous, IMO! And empowering
to have the understanding and control over the process.

Additionally, some times after an operation some people suffer from the
after effects of the anaesthetic.

Phos is often indicated.

Silicae is the Homeopathic scapel, not Staph. Silica can remove foreign objects from the body, like glass shards, splinters. Staph is for the "insult" of a cut from a sharp instrument.

I've decided to start the Staph tomorrow (the operation is on Monday afternoon). If there is clear and drastic improvement between tomorrow and Sunday, I'll stay with the Staph and have Arn as standby. If in the post-op the Staph doesn't help, then I'll move to Arnica. If there's no improvement from the Staph, I'll move to the Arnica from the day or two before the op.
After thinking about it a lot - and reading posts on minutus! - my reasoning is as follows. Apart from many other issues, this patient suffers from depression. My thinking is that if the Staph is a good constitutional and helps lift the depression even for the few days before the op, this will be a good way of preparing her emotionally and physically for the operation. This is a case of a patient who seems to "invite" a lot of operations, many of them problematic, which is why there is more of a constitutional feel around the op, rather than straightforward first aid. But I'll make sure she has both Staph and Arn around and hope for the best.

happen, not on what I think or assume might or will...

What about starting her with staph 6c or 12c before the operation,
rather than high potency? Altho I don't see aggravations as at all
common, they happen sometimes, and I think staph is rather "famous" for
aggravating, since it has so much to do with suppression! It would be
quite a shame if she were to start aggravating right before a
surgery... In my experience (few patients, but consistent thus far)
12c or 6c will work just as well for emotional relief as a high potency
will, you just need to plan on repeating it more often. And here
again, my approach is always to have the person notice just what has
changed since taking the first dose (usually within the first day
something definite *does* change), and let that/those be the marker(s)
for when to re-dose--daily, or (more often) every few days, possibly
less often.

you/she have more control over the process.

Hi Shannon,
Done any mind-reading lately?? I've just prepared Staph 9C for her for before the op! With 200C on hand for afterwards if necessary. So far I've prescribed Staph quite often without seeing any agg, but I work with water doses which makes a difference.
