Does anyone know who was actually representing the different countries in this group? Thanks. Rosemary

				Rosemary,
Here is the list of the supposedly neutral US Delegation to Codex
(presumably the Canadian one is as "neutral"):
From the corporate sector, official Codex participants include Amway Corp.,
Wyeth Pharmaceutical Co., DSM Nutritional Products, Mead Johnson
Nutritionals, Bristol Myers Squibb Co., Nestle USA, Herbalife
International, and a trade group called the Council for Responsible
Nutrition (CRN). The latter's Web site features a "Myth vs. Facts" on
Codex, which, to be blunt, is a self-serving spin that underplays the
negative ramifications of the guidelines on mom & pop supplement businesses.
CRN's membership includes Archer Daniels Midland Co., Cargill Health & Food
Technologies, Bayer Corp., Wyeth Consumer Health, Weider Nutrition
International Inc., Shaklee Corp., Nutraceutical Corp., Herbalife
International of America, Kemin Foods, General Nutrition Centers, Inc.,
Cadbury Adams USA LLC, DSM Nutritional Products, Eastman Chemical Company,
Mingtai Chemical LLC, and Monsanto Life Sciences Company. (A number of
these corporations have several voices at the meetings, since
representatives of corporate subsidiaries sit alongside participants from
their parent companies. And corporate-funded lobby groups have separate
voices.)
Lots of MLM¹s there. I don¹t know what to make of it.

i would imagine the multi-level marketing networks are very concerned about
the codex. if approved here, it would make their products drugs and liable

drug provings that pharm cos have to perform.
my concern is how did they get to the table? is their gross corp income so

I know this is off-topic, but it's also extremely relevant to many of us.
THESE are the health experts that get to dictate virtually the whole world's
access to supplements?????
How did they get so powerful that governments everywhere have acceded to
whatever they decide?
And I'd expect all those MLMs to assure that their supplements (admittedly
generally of pretty low quality) somehow get to be on the accepted list -- I
don't understand the dynamics of this whole thing. Not to mention that
there's something totally surreal about delegates of this ilk making laws
that affect everyone's health.
I asked the question so I'd know how to approach writing to my legislators.
But I can't see from this list why legislators anywhere would take this
seriously, aside from the money represented. Where can one get a better
perspective on what's really going on?
Thanks, Rosemary

				Tanya,
The MLM¹s are HUGE. Each one of the mentioned in the list is more than 1
BILLION $US in sales per annum!
They have in place lots of eager Œsellers¹ and buyers of all their products,
and therefore, if the prices go way up ( as they did in Germany, more than
10 fold on e.g., Echinacea tincture...) they will only make more money.
Most of these companies pride themselves of using the highest quality USP
grade ingredients. (that is, US Pharmaceutical grade...).
One is baffled....

				Rosemary-
For ideas on how to approach it, have you looked at the several links
that have been sent? They give good background and summary
information. The letters they offer as samples are (with so far one
exception) pretty long and detailed, and I wonder whether that is more
or less useful than just a few lines stating your own basic opinions on
the matter.
Apparently the main message we need to send (and should have started
long ago, had we known how and where) is that we don't want our
supplements restricted in this way, and that we don't want to be forced
to "harmonize" (yuk) with other nations in this matter. Ask that the
CAFTA legislation be rejected and sent back for re-write, to remove the
planned "harmonization" with reference to foods and supplements. (I
suspect most of us would want to scrap the whole thing, but confess I
haven't read it...)
