Will write a little more about this particular gent as his case is
interesting in light of what we discuss.

87 year old man came to see me about 6 weeks ago.

As mentioned, main problem was osteomyelitis.

Arose from an accident 23 years earlier in which he fractured his
femur. Was pinned and plated during surgery - infection contracted at
this stage which subsequently led to pin and plate being removed.

Since then has had 8 surgeries on leg and femur, lengthy
hospitalisations and multiple IV and oral antibiotics in an attempt to
resolve infection. Femur has refractured once because of infection. At
time of first consult, discharging bone splinters and fluid from sinus
in thigh.

Other symptoms/conditions included heartburn, periodic numbness of
left hand attributed to ligament damage from accident, coronary artery
angioplasty X2, back pain from old fracture, deaf in 1 ear from
ruptured drum during war, insomnia - would get up for several hours
each night and eat, loved beer, disliked cats, avoided fans and
drafts, philosophical, Sulphur facial features.

As mentioned, sleeping on a magnet underlay and using magnet bands on
leg. Did not ask him to stop as he had little understanding of
homeopathy and I felt sure he would not comply - thought I would see
what would happen.

Prescribed Sulphur 0/2, one test dose - to phone with response in 3 days.
At this point patient was commenced on 3xweek dose with instructions
to contact me if any adverse effects.

First followup appt - 2 weeks later. Had been experiencing profound
lethargy and lack of motivation on day following dose (would take of
an evening). On day of dose (before taking) would have return of
energy and be pain free and able to walk without a limp. Used these
days to play his bowls! Discharge significantly reduced. Insomnia,
heartburn and numbness also improving. Had not contacted me to report
lethargy and reduced motivation as he was thrilled to have 3 good days
a week! Advised patient that remedy was in too large a dose/ being
taken too frequently. Prescribed Sulphur 0/3 with less succussions and
increased dilution. Advised patient NOT to take remedy but to watch
and wait. Single dose of remedy to be taken on return of insomnia or
pain or limping and to notifiy me of doing so at this point.

Phone call received 3 days later. Had continued to take new potency at
3xweek frequency (do not think he was being contrary but that deafness
led to him saying he understood when perhaps he had not fully taken in
the instructions - were given to him in written form but at 87 who can
be bothered reading all that print). Now in severe pain from knee to
hip, unable to bend knee, feeling feverish. Told to stop Sulphur.
Prescribed Silica 30C on the basis of symptoms, being an antidote to
Sulphur and its general usefulness for osteomyelitis. Pain lessened
rapidly after first dose. Needed 3 more doses over next 2 days before
pain fully resolved. Magnets obviously had not interfered with the
action of Silica in this case.

At this point, insomnia returned. Told to take a single dose of
Sulphur and only repeat, after phoning, on return of pain, insomnia or
limp. Pain, throbbing in nature, returned 6 days later. Dose of
Sulphur taken - pain gone within 3 hours. Return of pain about 6 days
later - resolved with repeat of Sulphur. At this point told patient to
repeat dose at 6 day intervals until next appointment. Patient, now
having a much better understanding of homeopathy, said that he would
prefer to take remedy on return of symptoms rather than pre-empt
things and cause problems, and so he is.

Currently awaiting next appointment but have heard by phone that there
is no discharge, sinus has closed, feeling well (normally would feel
unwell with sinus closing and pus accumulating in tissues)sleeping
well, no heartburn, little numbness, still liking beer, etc, etc.

Thought: Magnets are probably like everything else - some people are
sensitive to them and so will experience symptoms or antidotal
effects.
