I goofed - Single dose or not

HI Shannon,
There is truth in your expereince.

Single doses may not be enough for a complete cure. BUt a single dose
in a snesitive state is quite wnough to evauate whether the case is
moving towards cure or moving towards aggravation due to a partial
similimum. The general symptoms have to improve before the
particluars do. HEre, even though there was a feeling of welbeing,
the general toxicity of the infection whcih was restricted to teh uro-
genital system, now became a constitutional expression.

Whether this is a good or bad sign from the homeopathic management
standpoint withing reasonable time limits, may be debateable. But the
points remain:
- CAntharis was partial.
- There was assoicated premature contractions that would precipitate
premature labour
- there was general infection that could be toxic for the baby in
utero, as now the (BActerial/infectious) toxins could cross through
the placenta

This progression unless quickly controlled with the correct
homeopathic remedy given at the right time, makes all
the "homeopathic philosophical debating" impotent.

All in all, prescribing in such a sensitive situation requires
alertness, experience and confidence in ones prescribing abilites
from a homeoapth and in the ideal situaiton, team work.
Sometimes as homeopaths we tend to downplay or degrade the importance
of allopathic intervention. But we need to realise that it is in
these touch and go situations that modern medicine plays an important
part today.
I think BEth has had the expreince we all go through at some point in
our practice, the human limits of us homeopaths!

Hi Leela,

I agree with all you've said here. As to whether canth was "the right
remedy" which would have cured the infection had more of it been given,
or whether it was a "partial" which either aggravated (which seems
unlikely to me) or simply wasn't close enough to stop the infection
*even* if more had been given--I think we can't tell from the two
"stop action frames" we've been given; even if we had the patient's
blow-by-blow, we'd only be guessing. IMO if we could run a re-play,
I'd want to follow up on the canth and see it either working or not
working; without seeing, tho, I think we're just guessing about "what
might have been".

Maybe another bit of "wisdom of hindsight" might have been to keep in
touch with her daily right across the weekend, possible clues/red flags
being (a) she's pregnant and a bit "wobbly", and (b) this infection has
already rebounded pretty aggressively. But I kind of doubt I would
have thought of that either, had I been in Beth's position. But
(thanks again for sharing this, Beth!) hopefully if I ever *do* see a
similar situation, I'll know to be more watchful than I might have
first thought necessary!

Best,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,
YEs thats right.
As I explained in the ealier detialed mails to BEth and Rosemary -
frequent follow up is the necessity in acute situations like this
when 1. a patient is pregnant 2. and with bad infection and 3. also
having premature pains.
This is a clinical nightmare for anyone - homeopath or an allopath.
Assessing an emmergency clinical situation comes with experience.
This has less to do with the remedy and more to do with management
technique.

Important to remember when treating a pregnant woman, that whatever
we may be doing, we're also dealing with another life within her.
One has to be precise with prescritions or else very vigilant to
change an inaccurate prescription.

Pregnancy is a medico-legal situation. GIving medications that can
cause harm to a pregnant woman or her fetus had high medico legal
implications because of the terrible problems modern medicine has
caused in the past.

Also during my own pregnancies (one of them with premature pains), I
needed just 6C of any acute remedy, which was enough to help
partially but produced a proving in me that was terrible to handle.
So much so that I refused to "TRY" any remedy unless I was absolutely
sure it would help. The thought of anyone suggesting repetition to
observe what the remedy would do, in that state, feels horrible!

IT is a state of hightened sensitivity, and my personal experience as
well as with the many pregnant patients I've handled is that one just
needs to prescribe a single dose of the accurate remedy (6C or 30C)
to bring about a cure during pregnancy. Accuracy is the key along
with supportive constitutional treatment.

Also Shannon, I must add - accurate observation of remedy response is
alsi essential in handling such clinical nightmares.

One cannot be ambivalent about whether Cantharis is partial or not
after the response of the first dose in such situations. ONe has to
be sure - and that comes after experience of positive remedy response
in acute situations.
My reading is that it was partial, (though specific) for the urinary
problem without taking into account the premature contractions. The
rubrics and MAteria MEdica clearly show that. Cantharis does not
cover those of the history. A proving would not be a good idea, dont'
you think?

Female
Retained placenta [Sep.], & painful urination. Expels moles,
dead foetuses, membranes, etc. Nymphomania [Hyos.; Lach.; Plat.;
Stram.]. Puerperal metritis, & inflammation of bladder. Menses too
early and too profuse; black swelling of vulva & irritation. Constant
discharge from uterus, aggravated false step; 5 & discharge from
bladder. Burning pain in ovaries; ovaries extremely sensitive to
touch; 5 esp. aggravated during menses. 2 Breasts painful, & dysuria.
Pruritus, & strong sexual desire; at climacteric. Leucorrhoea, &
sexual excitement, causing itching and masturbation. 7 Miscarriage.
Violent itching in the vagina. 5 Menses too early and dark, & great
soreness of breasts, etc. 4 Sterility.
