--Stage 8 (Fe, Os) is WORKING the most--producing the most, builders,
writing a book. RESOLUTE. PRESSURE. Stage 16 LAZINESS, doing nothing.
Working and doing nothing is another pole. (8,16)

Periodic Chart PERSPECTIVE of Stage 8 (paraphrased from notes from R.
Sankaran)
Period 3-Silica series--Issues of identity --aluminum and baryta, nat m
(when the other people leave= end of world). Alumina-- confusion of
identity. Silica- fixed identity. Phosphorus (indifferent to loved ones but
friendly to new people); and Sulphur (what I know is right you are wrong-
egotism).
Period 4‹Iron Series--after identity is established, security becomes a
priority. Outside influences are noticed‹One fears danger all around;
(example Calc (Stage 2)-fears murder (human), fire (elements), rats (animal
kingdom). Calc is the shell of the egg- inside safe, outside dangerous.
Further along Iron series-- manganum ferrum, cuprum, zincum etc‹³ I give up
own security and protect others². On the other side Ars (stage 15)‹³others
will take my security away²--will lose what they had ( i.e. when Calc had it
to start).
Left (stages 1-9) wants to build security, middle (10) has it but tenuous;
right side (11-17) is losing it.
Series 5 (Silver) has security but wants to find new things and wants
protection and back up-- a guide who has seen this before. Strontium wants
back up and guidance when it steps into something new. Stront can¹t do
something new but Cad, Argentum and Iodine assert that ³I am something
special²--, above the others, different, new creative, and will do new
things-- artists, scientists.
At the beginning of Series 6 (gold), Responsibility and Power issue arises--
Barium doesn¹t have the capability to take on responsibility in his life-has
a delusion that his legs are cut off (no power).

PERIODIC CHART PERSPECTIVE‹Stage 8 - (From Jayesh Shah Seminar Notes)
SENSATION OF PRESSURE.
When in Series 5 (Silver Series) you pass through Nb, (Stage 5), Moly
(Stage 6), Techn (Stage 7) , there is a lot of persecution, challenge,
fight they need to withstand. The next group is the high density metals- how
tough are you? Opposition increases as you move right on the periodic
table. Self worth increases, so the amount of stress, performing, facing
opposition, how good you are in your profession, or how powerful you are,
how good a job you do--- increases. Entire effort is focused on how I can
weather the opposition. Tungsten (Series 6-Gold Series, Stage 6) proves his
strength. But here in stage 8 it is to prove toughness. ³Metal put to the
test- refinement is over, now how tough is the structure? Capacity? What
storms can it face? ³I will break but I won¹t bend!² Toughness in the face
of pressure-in face of what? Challenges, hot, cold, density, in all possible
physical ways.
Like a shield to protect- I¹m impenetrable. Body builders who like to show
muscles. Take on opposition. Forcing all of your ideas. The ultimate test
of the structure. Examples--Iron- like the Knights- nothing that penetrates
thru the armour: resisting any kind of opposition. Can¹t penetrate
inside‹Osmium (vies with Iridium (Stage 9) as the most dense element).
Feeling: I¹m one against many- You have to fight back, never give up.
FERRUM-- Jayesh treated comptroller who had control over all the directors
in the company- by way of doing his job. He had to be right- Ferr met- one
vs. many, you have to be RIGHT (4th series). Taking on the opposition.
RUTHENIUM‹
--Strong willed, Firm, Fighter toughness is put to the test. Will it take
the impact (i.e. Jet- how tires take the test on landing)
--I am completely ready to take you on, I will resist all opposition,
OSMIUM‹(Jayesh Shah)‹
--Osmium- gives up/or not give up easily It is one of the highest density
metals --TOUGH--does not yield, and give up. Case: Chinese man osmium.
Dreams of being on a bike, being chased.
His father used to beat him brutally, he would withstand that. Went to
college where everyone was against him. 8 or 10 guys physically attacked
him. CC: body smells a lot.
HASSIUM‹Artificial with extremely short life

DD Manganum: Is able to give others their own space. They have more
space and are still able to practice. Their criticism is milder and more
constructive. Ferrum is more pushy, it is a 'must'.
DD Kali: they are very similar in their thoroughness. Both have the
same sense of duty. But Kali has a feeling of 'this is what I should be
doing', a perseverance with what they consider to be their duty. Ferrum has
more a sense of force, they have to carry on, they mustn't give in.
DD Calcarea's: There is an obvious relationship between the two. It
seems that the sensitivity to other people is characteristic of all the +2
charged metals. As if positive 2 charge is reflected in the relationship
between two people. Calcarea responds with a passive reaction: a retreat

--Lanthanides have to do it yourself. Two things Hercules were not
allowed to do: get help or get money for whatever he did. How can you get
help for self-control? Aspect of Stage 6 too. Gold Series is series 6
also ³do it on your own.²
--Lanthanides have to do with immune system. Stage 15 has loss of immune
system, which is AIDS.
--³Black hole² sensation is generic to Lanthanides more you go to right in
the series, the more obvious and overwhelming it is. In Ytterbium (leper is
stage 16) it¹s there only when they can¹t keep control. In Stage 15 it¹s
completely there. Feeling rejected, outcast.
LANTHANIDES (Margriet Suijs)
Goldseries
The Lanthanides have the same theme of power as the rest of the Gold Series.
But the Lanthanides have the build up of power in their inner side. It's a
learning, knowing, experiencing that their power is a strong one. They aren'
t leaders in the sense of the goldseries, it's more proving that they can do
it on their own.
Stage 3
In general the Lanthanides belong to stage 3. They try, have to search and
experience. They don't want to fix themselves yet. Combined they have fear
of not being able to fulfil their task an not even knowing exactly what
their task will be or has to be.
Stage 3 till 17
At the other side they have elements of all the stages from 3 till 17. It is
as if the successive elements are a subdivision of stage 3. Going to the
right the fears become less and the confidence grows.
Power
They have a strong power aspect. They want to learn to control things, the
strong powers in the world. They develop strong powers, ego-power. They can
exert strong forces, great motivation to perform their task. They need and
can develop an enormous concentration. Their creativity in finding solutions
for their tasks is great. The outer power is just a later expression of the
development of their inner power. Their tasks can be physical or real.
Self control
They need to develop self control, even more than control of the world. They
have to learn to control their soul, their emotions, thoughts and
intentions. It is an inner development, that is often not seen in the outer
world. It's an individuation process, getting a balance of all the inner
powers. It's more the release of the ego then developing it.
Two levelled
They always think at two levels: doing it and looking at it. They have
double thoughts, are conscious of their thoughts. They have to do that in
order not be led by teir own (onconscious) drives. This has also to do with
good and bad. They want to do good for others, so they have to find out what
is good for others an for themselves.
Worth
They have a strong sense of self worth. But they have to develop it more
before it can really be expressed. Again it has to do more with inner worth
than outer. But they can still long for recognition and appreceation. And
due to that they are very sensitive to criticism. But often others don't see
their hidden worth an treat them as normal mortals, even walk over them.
Then they have to restrain their mortification and indignation. When
criticised to much they can becom very angry. Or when not succeeding
themselves they can get envy.

In the book Homeopathy and the elements the Actiniden or Uraniumserie are
already introduced by Scholten. All elements of the serie are radioactive,
what means that the elements fall apart en there arise new elements. This
arising of new elements is also expressed in the homeopathic images of the
remedy's of this serie. People who need these have on one side the
inclination te mirror others, on the other hand they are open for taking
over of emotions through projection.
Communication
They are good in communication, verbal and non-verbal. Also with children
this aspect is striking. The sharp language of Lachesis but without the
jalousy and the compatitive element.
Wisdom, intuition
They are wise not in the sence of quibble but they show a wisdom that shows
insight. The fitting sense with that is intuition. They are clairvoyant,
clairaudient and sometimes they just know. They recognise the emotions that
can color the intuition and they know the truth.
Unseen power
They investigate the unconcious, mirror others in there. They are capable of
recognising unconsious motives by theirselves as well as by others. This way

Stage 8--94 Plutonium

Plutonium metallicum (actinoid, star shaped) - suppressed and explosive
energy, feels heavy, disintegration, feels threatened, multiple
personalities (like Platina), shape shifting, sexually aggressive or
obligated.
PLUTONIUM METALLICUM has extreme gravity, fatigue and exhaustion. Feels
constantly under threat and in fear of disintegration. Whereas in Osmium it
is recklessness, in Plutonium it is a deep and pressing constraint that
requires enormous effort to clear.
Again, just as in Ferrum and Osmium, we see the need for perseverance in the
effort required. Ferrum cannot sustain this due to depletion and weakness
and Osmium cannot either due to impatience.
The fatigue in Plutonium can be paralysing and by shape shifting or a change
of identity the individual is able to 'cheat' this threat of paralysis.
Multiple personalities can form to serve this purpose (as in Platina). This
is the beginning of the decay or disintegration. There is an obligation to
persevere, the powerful force is working against them so they can become
aggressive in their need to survive. Either aggressive, deeply religious,
philosophical, overly responsible or servile. Fear and panic also dominates.
Understandably, depression and other deep seated disease states develop,
such as asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, anorexia, hypertension,
bone diseases, psychosis, gastro-enteritis, sacralgia.
The very essence of survival is threatened and there is emotional pain and
physical pain. Relationships are threatened or disturbed. Terrible chaos and
accidents occur. We have a hint of this in Osmium.

Plutonium nitricum - suppressed and buried, sexually aggressive or servile,
threat to humanity, threatened relationships.
PLUTONIUM NITRICUM brings in the characteristics of Nitricum, one of these
being a sense of abundance and expansion which links in with the
capaciousness of Ferrum. Nitricum needs space else it will explode and as
explosion is the main threat behind Plutonium this creates a twofold terror.
As with Plutonium metallicum we have again suppression, threat and
endangerment of survival of the species and this threat is either faced with
aggression or servility. Depression, fear and panic is observed. The
individual ceases to be important in the survival of the species so there
are issues around confusion of identities. Accidents feature again, often in
dreams. Once more, relationships are threatened. Because the Nitricum aspect
cannot be contained in a small space there will be terrible fears
accompanied by a need to escape. Interestingly a fear of cancer is a strong
keynote and one could define cancer as an 'expansive' disease.
Physically you can expect to see congestion, swelling, respiratory problems
such as bronchitis and asthma, allergies, ailments of the spinal column and
chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches that feel as if the head will explode,
acute illnesses that have taken on a sub chronic state, such as tonsillitis,
nausea, diarrhoea.
Such is the threat with Plutonium I believe some practitioners have noted
bizarre accidents occurring just by having the remedy on the premises!
In summary
Related themes are ENERGY - EXPANSION - ACCIDENTS - EXHAUSTION.
The central idea of plutonium
is the sacrifice of the own inner way/destiny or the suppression and
blocking of one's inner human powers. Consequently man is not able to learn
about his destiny. His essence/being ('atomic nucleus') decays into various
personalities ("multiple personality", a topical term in psychotherapy).
These different personalities stand for various constraints and they become
apparent as masks or different roles which the individual tries anxiously
and compulsively to fulfil. Therefore strong efforts are made to
compensate/to hide this decay.
High ideals and relapses into chronic exhaustion (chronic fatigue
syndrome), depression and feelings of inferiority result from this
disintegration. A further attempt to stop decline and decay is an increased
sense of responsibility, such as children who try to prevent the family from
disintegrating. When essence/being decays, extreme tension and feelings of
panic can emerge. Those around perceive this as 'unshakeable will',
outbursts of reckless aggression or severe depression. Clinically, we were
able to observe the curing of auto aggression diseases, asthma, heavy
menstrual bleeding, anorexia, chronic fatigue syndrome, hypertension,
neurodermatitis, multiple allergies and hypersensitivities, immobilising
sacroiliac pains, severe gastro-enteritis with menacing exsiccation,
psychosis of a 13 year-old boy with the delusion: 'every adult, parents
included, is a teacher.'
We think that the Plutonium disease can be cured if we admit with
confidence the often painful disintegration of masks and roles, and if we
abandon expectations, constraints and moral ideas about how life ought to
be. Instead we need to accept being as it is and return to our essence, that
is to say to move from strict ideas about being into conscious being itself.

A short history of the periodic table.
The rectangular periodic table is familiar to anybody who has ever been in a
science laboratory or classroom. This ingenious functional groupingof the
chemical elements was created by several European scientists in the decade
of the 1860's. In 1863, a 44 year old French geologist, A. E. Béguyer de
Chancourtois created a list of the elements arranged by increasing atomic
weight. The list was wrapped around a cylinder so that several sets of
similar elements lined up, creating the first geometric representation of
the periodic law.
In England, 32 year old analytical chemist John A. R. Newlands was also
wrapping the elements, noting that chemical groups repeated every eight
elements. He named this the octave rule, and compared it to a musical scale.
Some less observant members of the English Chemical Society considered this
absurd, so his work was ignored for years.
Chemists Dmitrii I. Mendeleev, a Russian, and German Lothar Meyer were
working independently in 1868 and 1869 on the arrangement of elements into
seven columns, corresponding to various chemical and physical properties.
Their tables were similar - they acknowledged each other's work - the
differences are subtle but important: Meyer's table was an accurate (for the
time) accounting of the known facts about each element, such as melting
point and atomic volume. The table clearly showed the existence of periodic
chemical families. In 1870 Meyer's table and description of the periodic law
was published in Liebig's Annalen.
A year earlier however, the 35 year old Mendeleev presented a much bolder
and scientifically useful table. His paper, On the Relation of the
Properties to the Atomic Weights of the Elements, was enthusiastically
received by the Russian Chemical Society. In it, the periodic relationship
between chemical groups, that is, elements with a similar stoichiometry of
reaction, is clearly illustrated. In a scientific triumph, gaps in the table
accurately predicted undiscovered elements.
Although it is nearly 130 years old, Mendeleev's table differs little from
the charts on the walls of laboratories today. The insight obtained in that
productive decade resulted in a tool that furthers understanding and eases
the use of chemistry in every laboratory in the world.

Period 3-Silica series--Issues of identity --aluminum and baryta, nat m
(when the other people leave= end of world). Alumina-- confusion of
identity. Silica- fixed identity. Phosphorus (indifferent to loved ones but
friendly to new people); and Sulphur (what I know is right you are wrong-
egotism).
Period 4‹Iron Series--after identity is established, security becomes a
priority. Outside influences are noticed‹One fears danger all around;
(example Calc (Stage 2)-fears murder (human), fire (elements), rats (animal
kingdom). Calc is the shell of the egg- inside safe, outside dangerous.
Further along Iron series-- manganum ferrum, cuprum, zincum etc‹³ I give up
own security and protect others². On the other side Ars (stage 15)‹³others
will take my security away²--will lose what they had ( i.e. when Calc had it
to start).
Left (stages 1-9) wants to build security, middle (10) has it but tenuous;
right side (11-17) is losing it.
Series 5 (Silver) has security but wants to find new things and wants
protection and back up-- a guide who has seen this before. Strontium wants
back up and guidance when it steps into something new. Stront can¹t do
something new but Cad, Argentum and Iodine assert that ³I am something

SENSATION OF PRESSURE.
When in Series 5 (Silver Series) you pass through Nb, (Stage 5), Moly
(Stage 6), Techn (Stage 7) , there is a lot of persecution, challenge,
fight they need to withstand. The next group is the high density metals- how
tough are you? Opposition increases as you move right on the periodic
table. Self worth increases, so the amount of stress, performing, facing
opposition, how good you are in your profession, or how powerful you are,
how good a job you do--- increases. Entire effort is focused on how I can
weather the opposition. Tungsten (Series 6-Gold Series, Stage 6) proves his
strength. But here in stage 8 it is to prove toughness. ³Metal put to the
test- refinement is over, now how tough is the structure? Capacity? What
storms can it face? ³I will break but I won¹t bend!² Toughness in the face
of pressure-in face of what? Challenges, hot, cold, density, in all possible
physical ways.
Like a shield to protect- I¹m impenetrable. Body builders who like to show
muscles. Take on opposition. Forcing all of your ideas. The ultimate test
of the structure. Examples--Iron- like the Knights- nothing that penetrates
thru the armour: resisting any kind of opposition. Can¹t penetrate

Goldseries
The Lanthanides have the same theme of power as the rest of the Gold Series.
But the Lanthanides have the build up of power in their inner side. It's a
learning, knowing, experiencing that their power is a strong one. They aren'
t leaders in the sense of the goldseries, it's more proving that they can do
it on their own.
Stage 3
In general the Lanthanides belong to stage 3. They try, have to search and
experience. They don't want to fix themselves yet. Combined they have fear
of not being able to fulfil their task an not even knowing exactly what
their task will be or has to be.
Stage 3 till 17
At the other side they have elements of all the stages from 3 till 17. It is
as if the successive elements are a subdivision of stage 3. Going to the
right the fears become less and the confidence grows.
Power
They have a strong power aspect. They want to learn to control things, the
strong powers in the world. They develop strong powers, ego-power. They can
exert strong forces, great motivation to perform their task. They need and
can develop an enormous concentration. Their creativity in finding solutions
for their tasks is great. The outer power is just a later expression of the
development of their inner power. Their tasks can be physical or real.
Self control
They need to develop self control, even more than control of the world. They
have to learn to control their soul, their emotions, thoughts and
intentions. It is an inner development, that is often not seen in the outer
world. It's an individuation process, getting a balance of all the inner
powers. It's more the release of the ego then developing it.
Two levelled
They always think at two levels: doing it and looking at it. They have
double thoughts, are conscious of their thoughts. They have to do that in
order not be led by teir own (onconscious) drives. This has also to do with
good and bad. They want to do good for others, so they have to find out what
is good for others an for themselves.
Worth
They have a strong sense of self worth. But they have to develop it more
before it can really be expressed. Again it has to do more with inner worth
than outer. But they can still long for recognition and appreceation. And
due to that they are very sensitive to criticism. But often others don't see
their hidden worth an treat them as normal mortals, even walk over them.
Then they have to restrain their mortification and indignation. When
criticised to much they can becom very angry. Or when not succeeding
themselves they can get envy.
Isolated
They have to do things on their own, to prove that they have controle. So
they can be very isolated.
Hercules
Their tasks are like the works of Hercales. The tasks are immense and one
has to be a really strong person to fulfil them.
Serving
They have to learn to serve others. To be humble although they are stronger
and more.
Autonomy
Autonomy is a very important them. Even when all others think different,
they have hold to their own opinion.
Sexuality
They can have a strong sexuality. Attraction to the other is a strong
feature, as in opposite electric poles. It can also lead to extreme forms of
sexuality like sadomasochism.

Carbonseries: they develop their ego, but don't question or control it. They

retire their ego from the emotions and thoughs, in a way releasing,
trancending their ego.
Stage 3: trying, searching, but in the Lanthanides it's connecting with
proving themselves.
Stage 6z; they have to prove themselves too.
STAGE 8 62-Samarium (Scholten)

--Migraines classical very strong if visual disturbances also. Samarium
is the strongest Lanthanide for headache, b/c of pressure in the head. (cf

The Actinides are very similar to Actinium of the Uranium series, just as
the Lanthanides are similar to Lanthanum, the third element in the Gold

ACTINIDE SERIES (Margriet Suijs)
Radioactivity
In the book Homeopathy and the elements the Actiniden or Uraniumserie are
already introduced by Scholten. All elements of the serie are radioactive,
what means that the elements fall apart en there arise new elements. This
arising of new elements is also expressed in the homeopathic images of the
remedy's of this serie. People who need these have on one side the
inclination te mirror others, on the other hand they are open for taking
over of emotions through projection.
Communication
They are good in communication, verbal and non-verbal. Also with children
this aspect is striking. The sharp language of Lachesis but without the
jalousy and the compatitive element.
Wisdom, intuition
They are wise not in the sence of quibble but they show a wisdom that shows
insight. The fitting sense with that is intuition. They are clairvoyant,
clairaudient and sometimes they just know. They recognise the emotions that
can color the intuition and they know the truth.
Unseen power
They investigate the unconcious, mirror others in there. They are capable of
recognising unconsious motives by theirselves as well as by others. This way
they investigate the logica of behaviour and feelings.
Magic
If they focus totaly on their goal they wil reach it. Misfortune in this
proces they will recognise as not being totaly focussed on their goal.
Misfortune can also be apparent: then they let go and the proces develops on
its own.
Observing, awareness
They know people and their deeds. They fit in different cultures and there
is now deed that surprises them. Everything that people do they can imagen,
even the most inconceivable. From that option it is the perpose of life to
come to a reconciliation with yourself and the other. In cycli of lives we
are victum, offender, accuser and judge. They know these stages and let the
jugdement go. The observance is without judgement.
Old age
With this serie belongs the old age. There fits the wihdrawn being present.
They are present without intervene or steer.
Complaints
Cancer, bonemarowconditions, leukemia, congenital and genetic deviations.
Stage 8--94 Plutonium
--=====================
Plutonium metallicum (actinoid, star shaped) - suppressed and explosive
energy, feels heavy, disintegration, feels threatened, multiple
personalities (like Platina), shape shifting, sexually aggressive or
obligated.
PLUTONIUM METALLICUM has extreme gravity, fatigue and exhaustion. Feels
constantly under threat and in fear of disintegration. Whereas in Osmium it
is recklessness, in Plutonium it is a deep and pressing constraint that
requires enormous effort to clear.
Again, just as in Ferrum and Osmium, we see the need for perseverance in the
effort required. Ferrum cannot sustain this due to depletion and weakness
and Osmium cannot either due to impatience.
The fatigue in Plutonium can be paralysing and by shape shifting or a change
of identity the individual is able to 'cheat' this threat of paralysis.
Multiple personalities can form to serve this purpose (as in Platina). This
is the beginning of the decay or disintegration. There is an obligation to
persevere, the powerful force is working against them so they can become
aggressive in their need to survive. Either aggressive, deeply religious,
philosophical, overly responsible or servile. Fear and panic also dominates.
Understandably, depression and other deep seated disease states develop,
such as asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, anorexia, hypertension,
bone diseases, psychosis, gastro-enteritis, sacralgia.
The very essence of survival is threatened and there is emotional pain and
physical pain. Relationships are threatened or disturbed. Terrible chaos and
accidents occur. We have a hint of this in Osmium.

Plutonium nitricum - suppressed and buried, sexually aggressive or servile,
threat to humanity, threatened relationships.
PLUTONIUM NITRICUM brings in the characteristics of Nitricum, one of these
being a sense of abundance and expansion which links in with the
capaciousness of Ferrum. Nitricum needs space else it will explode and as
explosion is the main threat behind Plutonium this creates a twofold terror.
As with Plutonium metallicum we have again suppression, threat and
endangerment of survival of the species and this threat is either faced with
aggression or servility. Depression, fear and panic is observed. The
individual ceases to be important in the survival of the species so there
are issues around confusion of identities. Accidents feature again, often in
dreams. Once more, relationships are threatened. Because the Nitricum aspect
cannot be contained in a small space there will be terrible fears
accompanied by a need to escape. Interestingly a fear of cancer is a strong
keynote and one could define cancer as an 'expansive' disease.
Physically you can expect to see congestion, swelling, respiratory problems
such as bronchitis and asthma, allergies, ailments of the spinal column and
chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches that feel as if the head will explode,
acute illnesses that have taken on a sub chronic state, such as tonsillitis,
nausea, diarrhoea.
Such is the threat with Plutonium I believe some practitioners have noted
bizarre accidents occurring just by having the remedy on the premises!
In summary
Related themes are ENERGY - EXPANSION - ACCIDENTS - EXHAUSTION.
The central idea of plutonium
is the sacrifice of the own inner way/destiny or the suppression and
blocking of one's inner human powers. Consequently man is not able to learn
about his destiny. His essence/being ('atomic nucleus') decays into various
personalities ("multiple personality", a topical term in psychotherapy).
These different personalities stand for various constraints and they become
apparent as masks or different roles which the individual tries anxiously
and compulsively to fulfil. Therefore strong efforts are made to
compensate/to hide this decay.
High ideals and relapses into chronic exhaustion (chronic fatigue
syndrome), depression and feelings of inferiority result from this
disintegration. A further attempt to stop decline and decay is an increased
sense of responsibility, such as children who try to prevent the family from
disintegrating. When essence/being decays, extreme tension and feelings of
panic can emerge. Those around perceive this as 'unshakeable will',
outbursts of reckless aggression or severe depression. Clinically, we were
able to observe the curing of auto aggression diseases, asthma, heavy
menstrual bleeding, anorexia, chronic fatigue syndrome, hypertension,
neurodermatitis, multiple allergies and hypersensitivities, immobilising
sacroiliac pains, severe gastro-enteritis with menacing exsiccation,
psychosis of a 13 year-old boy with the delusion: 'every adult, parents
included, is a teacher.'
We think that the Plutonium disease can be cured if we admit with
confidence the often painful disintegration of masks and roles, and if we
abandon expectations, constraints and moral ideas about how life ought to
be. Instead we need to accept being as it is and return to our essence, that
is to say to move from strict ideas about being into conscious being itself.

A short history of the periodic table.
The rectangular periodic table is familiar to anybody who has ever been in a
science laboratory or classroom. This ingenious functional groupingof the
chemical elements was created by several European scientists in the decade
of the 1860's. In 1863, a 44 year old French geologist, A. E. Béguyer de
Chancourtois created a list of the elements arranged by increasing atomic
weight. The list was wrapped around a cylinder so that several sets of
similar elements lined up, creating the first geometric representation of
the periodic law.
In England, 32 year old analytical chemist John A. R. Newlands was also
wrapping the elements, noting that chemical groups repeated every eight
elements. He named this the octave rule, and compared it to a musical scale.
Some less observant members of the English Chemical Society considered this
absurd, so his work was ignored for years.
Chemists Dmitrii I. Mendeleev, a Russian, and German Lothar Meyer were
working independently in 1868 and 1869 on the arrangement of elements into
seven columns, corresponding to various chemical and physical properties.
Their tables were similar - they acknowledged each other's work - the
differences are subtle but important: Meyer's table was an accurate (for the
time) accounting of the known facts about each element, such as melting
point and atomic volume. The table clearly showed the existence of periodic
chemical families. In 1870 Meyer's table and description of the periodic law
was published in Liebig's Annalen.
A year earlier however, the 35 year old Mendeleev presented a much bolder
and scientifically useful table. His paper, On the Relation of the
Properties to the Atomic Weights of the Elements, was enthusiastically
received by the Russian Chemical Society. In it, the periodic relationship
between chemical groups, that is, elements with a similar stoichiometry of
reaction, is clearly illustrated. In a scientific triumph, gaps in the table
accurately predicted undiscovered elements.
Although it is nearly 130 years old, Mendeleev's table differs little from
the charts on the walls of laboratories today. The insight obtained in that
productive decade resulted in a tool that furthers understanding and eases
the use of chemistry in every laboratory in the world.
