The Redwood is one of the two species in the Taxodiaceae plant family. It
is a conifer that only occurs in a narrow coastal strip along the Pacific
coast, stretching from the Canadian border to southern California. They are
the tallest trees on earth. The needles grow in spirals round the branches.
The seed scutum is thick, shaped like a shield, and has a small point in
the middle. Sequoia sempervirens lives for more than 1,000 years and grows
to more than 100 metres. There are also veterans that live to the venerable
age of 2000.
Sequoia owes its long life to two factors. Because of their acidity, the
trees are almost immune to moulds that cause woodrot. Furthermore, they
have such a thick bark [30 centimetres in large trees] that they are
protected from forest fires, although strong winds could turn forest debris
and heavy undergrowth into a torch, eating through and drying out the
surface of the sap wood, leaving it susceptible to later fires. A third
factor that ensures their survival is another rare characteristic in
conifers: the capacity to reproduce from sprouts, that spring from the
trunk. Young trees can often be seen around old trunks, giving Sequoias a
better start than seedlings.
The species, which is now protected, provides excellent wood for
carpentry/furniture. The name 'Sequoia' is derived from Sequoiah, the
inventor of the Cherokee alphabet. 'Sempervirens' means 'always green'.
"Sequoia's are the oldest living plants on earth. They are also the
fastest growing plants. The coastal redwood [S. sempervirens] may put on
six, eight or even more feet of height in a single season. The rapid growth
may continue even after the trunk has become 100 feet or more in
circumference. There does not seem to be a phase of a Sequoia's life span
that can be termed 'old age' in the ordinary sense. It's life processes do
not appear to slow down or change in any basic way. Even the oldest
continue to grow rapidly, while still producing seeds. Theoretically, it
appears that a Sequoia could go on living forever. Death comes to them only
through means of fire or through an external physical event such as strong
winds, being cut down or falling down because of their tallness and having
their roots too shallow in the soil. It has been observed that even after a
tree is burnt and hollow it grows around the burn and continues to reach
upward. All of this shows an incredible will to live and adapt. Their
history started prior to the time of the Ice Age, over 200 million years
ago. They were the dominant trees of North America. There are now only two
species left, the S. sempervirens [the coastal redwood] and the S. gigantum
[which grows more inland].
The geographic area where it grows is a fog belt and is apparently the
secret to its success. The ground is always moist, effectively excluding
wildfire while providing abundant water for sustaining such massive trees.
These ancient forests have the means of acquiring water even when there is
no rain or snow. They capture moisture from the fog. Fog reduces water loss
from the needles and contain high amounts of carbon dioxide, which favours
