Status of avian fly in Souther China

Greetings
do we know of the status of avian flu? The Vancouver Sun (of British Columbia, Canada) published an article today stating that 10,000 patients mostly children are down with the flu in Souther China with symptoms of runny nose, cough, and fever. However, this is not the pandemic.
I would like to know if there are reasons for concerns or this is just the media looking for a story.
