Minutus

Dear List Group,

I saw a young patient today (2 1/2 years old) who has been diagnosed with CP
due to a birth trauma -- she was actually declared dead on arrival at
hospital, but her father insisted on a Caesarian and she miraculously
survived. Obviously she suffered asphyxia. She is very delayed physically,
but appears to be fairly appropriately developing mentally, although her
motor skills make this difficult to assess as she isn't talking yet. There
is very little else to go on. She is a seemingly happy little girl, healthy
in virtually all other regards. I'm really not sure where to go here, and
not at all sure what to expect. I there anyone who has treated a similar
case, or could offer an opinion?

Why is she coming to see you? Physical delays? If so work on that. Cranial work would help here as well.

She came to see me because the mum was hoping homeopathy could help
expediate some of the physical development. She is already getting excellent
cranial work. She is fully unvaccinated and her Mum also wants
constitutional treatment to support that choice.

i once had a baby who was diagnosed CP and mental retardation.
i felt he was traumatized at birth, abandoned in the hospital and
given oodles of antibiotics. at 10 mos age he was not sitting up,
crawling, trying to talk, crying or even asking for food. i used
arnica for trauma and later opium. but i think this baby of yours
does not have the numbness of response that i was dealing with.

i also dealt with a young male who sufferred some asphyixia at
birth and other trauma. as a young child the schools dx him as
having ADD. Phos helped him momentarily and then the mother
refused to bring him to me.

Hi Beth

I have some info on how to treat asphyxia neonartum in order to prevent CP
and or revive, which is probably not relevant with a 2 1/2 yr old.
However, I looked through Master's Clinical Observations of Children's rems
and he does have entries for CP

Rems that include CP are Apis, Bell, Calc phos, Chlorpromazinium, Lyc, Nux-v
and Plumb met.

clearly the case needs to be individualised, as per the usual method. However, I would't get too stuck into a neonatal frame of mind. The child is now older - no longera neonate - but she is clearly suffering from the effects of the initial brain trauma caused by the anoxia.
There was a research programe in the USA - (New England I think) some years back - maybe 10 or so. In the study they looked at the lng term effects of brain injury and the homepathic treatment thereof. One of the most useful remedies they found coming up time and agin in individualised treatment, was Nat Sulph; I would also consider soem oftheother remedies such as Helleborus, or remedies where there is poor coordination, developmental delay, etc.

I was also looking at remedies like opium -- interestingly this child never
complains and has had long bouts of constipation. I'm not sure what to
expect from a remedy in a case like this, nor how much to emphasize the
birth history in my repertorization -- my feeling is that it is fairly
central to who she is today.

I am sure that's true - without the birth injury she wouldn't be so stuck. Equally, depending on the extent of the damage caused by the anoxia, it may have affected her bowel function, so she may have problems with elimination, the fact that it is erratic is unusual, but that could be key. If your gut is telling you Opium then give it - you never know.
