DEC is used to kill the parasite, rather than prevent it - it is a
microfilaricide

there are reported side effects but not necessarily will they appear:

itching and swelling of face, espec. eyes
Fever, painful and tender glands in neck, armpits, or groin; skind rash
Loss of vision; night blindness; tunnel vision (if treating river blindness)
Headache, joint pain, unusual tiredness or weakness
Dizziness, nausea or vomiting.
