Tells

One of Paul Herscu's students had such a talent for observation that he used
to advise top athletes on the moves necessary to replicate their best
performances. Watching Paul at work one day, he said, "Did you ever notice
that when you're getting ready to prescribe Ignatia, you move your foot a
certain way?"

I thought of that today as I was trying to decide on a remedy for a
"difficult" patient and recognized in myself signs of a mounting irritation
familiar from years with an ex-spouse who badly needed Sulphur. (Guess what
remedy this patient received!)

Since our kinesthetic response to patients can be important in choosing a
remedy, I thought I'd ask the list if members have noticed any recurrent
responses in themselves to different remedy types. What remedies really get
under your skin and how do they affect you?

Peace,
Cinnabar

I had a similar experience with a patient needing Lachesis. He made a
suggestion, and I immediately replied, as if I were feeling potentially
cornered, "Oh, no -- I'm not playing THAT game." Then I thought to myself,
"Wow that was a strange reaction to a client!" and realized that he was
secretly very manipulative. That was a big clue to the remedy, which has
worked beautifully for him. I have learned to take my response to people
into account as a remedy clue, from that and other experiences. A
psychotherapist friend said when I told her about that experience, "Oh,
that's counter-transference." Rosemary

Interesting question Cinnabar - I was too intent on watching for the 'tells' in px
to notice my own ! I notice my 'reaction', but not so much any active physical
'tell', as I'm aware that if I don't leave my body-language *open* then I might not
necessarily get the full story ... But now you have mentioned it, I will pay closer
attention - if I suddenly notice I'm wanting to e.g. *kick* my foot ... well, all I
have to do is check whether that is my feelings about the px, or theirs about me!
(More likely about their dissatisfaction with life, in reality I guess).

All the best, Barbara
