Winsor McCay was a cartoonist around the turn of the last century. I
believe he was the first to do an animated movie with a character
name Gertie the Dinosaur.
One of his running comic strips (starting in 1905) was one called
"Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" in which the central character is
having amazing experiences (a man, trying to cross the street, is run
over by several vehicles, each one severing one of his limbs; a
woman, admiring her alligator skin purse, finds the purse turning
inton a giant alligator and eating her; a woman, finding her pet dog
on a train track, head-butts the train to save the animal; etc.). The
last frame in the strip is the character waking up (often in a sweat)
saying, "I shouldn't eat Rarebit before going to sleep."

McCay was also the creator of the character "Little Nemo."

A collection of his Rarebit cartoons were published by Dover Books.
Might still be in Print.

"Welch Rarebit," by the way, is made with a thick cheese sauce, often
with mustard, then spread on pieces of tost, and put under a grill
until golden brown.
