cryptococcus--spinal fungal infection

does anyone have any experience dealing with cryptococcus,
which is a spinal fungal infection. i have a dear friend who
has been sufferring from cirrhosis of the liver which developed
from an old undiagnosed hep c infection. she has been
comatose for 2 weeks now and picked up this opportunistic
infection in the hospital. her vital signs are very low now.
kidneys have stopped putting out urine today. bp very low (84/23).
hospital is very conservative and it is hard to get anything
alternative in there.
am wondering whether there is any info on this list that
might help this situation. i am too close to treat her myself--too
upsetting and am looking for someone who might come in
to the hospital to help. i know there is not much info being
given. i would say simply that grief was a causal factor when
she became symptomatic a few years ago. she had been under
great stress when her husband was flipping out and going after his
daughter-in-law claiming he was in love with her. this woman
fell down the stairs and tore up her knee. she had 2 operations that
were not too successful and has had seriousl problems with her knees
ever since. at that time and went into a state of depression and it has
been a downhill run ever since. the liver sx began about 2 yrs ago. she
is very overweight. ate very poorly. smoked. loves her kids. set very
few boundaries with them and they acted out all their lives causing her
much stress as she kept rescuing them from all their insanity (arrests,
jail, drugs, etc.) in her childhood she was the oldest of many sibs and
became the caretaker of them. so she relates to kids as the big sister
and is loved by all. her husbands is nothing more than an overgrown child
who relied on her to take care of everything.
she is very closed emotionally. is very practical in her approach to
problems. as long as she could figure out a set of steps to take
she was okay. once when she had no options she went into a panic
getting feint and sufferring heart palpitations. even in the hospital
i saw this reaction when her husband came in and began his
self-centered chattering about his needs from her. her breathing
became stressed and she shut down, falling back in a comatose state
instantly. that was her reaction to feeling trapped by him and the
anxiety she felt. i think this is typical. i am afraid dying is the option
she might be chosing and fear that she has progressed too far to do
anything to bring her back
