If after the first attempt of starting the engine it stops, then of course
you use the starter again.
But whilst the engine is turning of its own accord - no matter how badly -
do you use the starter again? The answer is NO.
That is exactly my point.

If the practise of using the starter does not result in the engine firing
properly, then obviously something else may need to be checked - that goes
beyond saying - it is also the case with our patients - we call it
MAINTAINING CAUSE!!

PND is short for post nasal drip - the flow the patient feels at the back of
the throat.

I second your opinion and thank you very much for trying to explain the
point with an example of engine. Why should we not keep on turning the
ignition switch after a little pause till engine starts, even in an old
engine, wherein it is more needed than in a new engine? And what if the plug
wire or battery cable is disconnected?? I think this example does not fully
fit here.
Yes, we should base our faith on solid grounds and analyse the experience
and history on the basis of facts and scientific grounds.

OTOH, if you are starting up a blender half-full of liquid, you may get less
splashing if you start with two or three short pulses to start the liquid
moving, rather than blasting it right onto "high" and all over the ceiling!
(This is the analogy my teacher used to explain the "logic" behind some uses
of the approach.)

But analogies can take us only so far. The proof would be in evaluating
specific cases, and comparing.

A good example.

However, this is a good example and I like it especially that it is using a
liquid medium - Now think LM!

With LMs we do not wait for the action to come to a complete halt, we are
permitted to repeat as soon as the patient feels that they are not as good
as they were.
But we EVALUATE the patient's case before permitting the repetition and then
after the while the patient learns to manage his/her own case.

Also with the blender does the motor come to a stop before the next pulse is
applied? No not necessarily, because with electrical motors you do not have
the meshing of gears as you would in the engine of the car and its starter.

True, which makes real "proof" a bit of a bugbear! And yet I do find, and I
think others find too, that we *do* have a sense of what we *expect* in a
given case, wouldn't you agree? Of course one is sometimes surprised...
