Hi All,

I've read that many practitioners use a lower potency of the same
remedy that caused an aggravation to soothe that aggravation. I've
not done this myself and wonder about the principle that governs
it.

The homeopathic aggravation is an artificial disease. If that
disease is vibrating at 200C potency, for instance, how can a
weaker, similar disease (same remedy, lower potency) overcome it?
Based on Hahnemannian principle, won't the stronger disease repel
the weaker, similar one, particularly since the vital force cannot
support two diseases of the same nature?

You say the higher potencies are stronger than the lower ones. This is generally believed by many homepaths but I think this belief needs close investigation. As you know we have potency and we have dose. These are different. Potency is the number of succussions and dilutions, and dose is the amount of remedy taken. According to Hahnemann (not Kent) higher dose has stronger effect on the organism and so we can prevent aggravations by reducing the dose. This has been verified by many homeopaths that follow Hahnemann's instructions and use remedies in solution form.
Potency is the most controversial subject in homeopathy. Generally it is believed that higher potency is stronger but personally I think that strength of a remedy is mostly determined by the dosage. It seems that different potencies have slightly different energy patterns. I remember a picture in a book by Dr Jayasuriya where he has taken pictures of different potencies of Pulsatilla with a special camera. Maybe it is Kirlian photography. The pictures where different from each other. So I think different potencies are not stronger or weaker than each other. They are just different. Maybe we can consider them as "simillimums" and take this point as a reason for the phenomenon of antidoting a potency with another one of the same remedy. I hope some day I can purchase an aura camera and conduct researches on this subject.

What you say makes sense, and yet it doesn't. If the importance of
potency was restricted to just being different, and not
stronger/weaker, higher/lower, then couldn't a 1M be used to calm an
aggravation from a 30C? Yet, it's not done that way. If dose size
is the real issue with regard to aggravations, then why use a
different potency to calm one? Also, if a too-large dose is
responsible for an aggravation, might a small dose in the same
potency ameliorate, or will it merely add to the already excessive
energy?

If "stronger" refers to the effect of the remedy, then I agree with Feras,
that "different" seems a more accurate description than "stronger" or
"weaker". E.g., if the remedy is deeply suited, then the high potency dose
is apt to have a longer duration than the low (tho in my experience repeated
low potency doses will give just as full a relief)--so if "longer duration"
equates with "stronger", then in this instance the high potency dose is
"stronger".

But if the remedy is only partially suited to the case, then high potency
may produce no response at all, whereas low potency may give very nice
initial result (tho likely it will prove temporary and palliative rather
than curative). But in this case it is the low potency that will produce a
result, so we could say that the low potency dose is "stronger".

So I guess it's another of those "define your terms" questions!

More potent? More bioenergetically penetrating? Hmm, I see what
you mean about "stronger" not necessarily being very descriptive.
Yet, my question remains: If "different" is the only criterion
necessary for a remedy to be used to soothe an aggravation from
another potency of the same remedy, then why is a lower potency
always used if "different" is the only factor sought? There has to
be some element of energetic potential to consider, else any potency
would do, yet I've never heard of anyone using a higher potency to
curb an aggravation.

I am jumping in without carefully reading every email on this thread. I have heard many confusing things about potencies and maybe it is just confusing to ask. I asked my teacher about antidoting remedies and he said that he had heard that giving a much lower potency or a much higher potency can antidote a remedy. He had never done this and was not very clear. Could anything like that be happening in your talk about soothing an aggravation? I have also heard about giving a high potency, then pushing or supporting the reaction with a very low potency. Just ignore this if it is only confusing.

The way I see it............and I might be totally wrong in terms of physics, but this is my take on it:

Every remedy has a vibrational frequency that is typical of it; every potency of the remedy has the same frequency but the intensity is different.
The aggravation comes from a too big discrepancy between the intensity of the remedy and the intensity of the patient's disease.

We know (?) from physics that frequencies/wavelenghts can add to each other when they are in phase or neutralise each other when they are in phase opposition.
This is what happens with a DIFFERENT potency (and not necessarily higher or lower) from the same remedy: it modulates/modifies the intensity of the first remedy, hence changing the reaction and the aggravation.

Once again, a physicist might have a good laugh at this, but to me, that makes sense and covers the whole question.

Actually, "intensity" is the word that I think best describes the
issue relative to the different potencies. What you say makes all
kinds of sense. Modulate: temper, adjust, vary. How many times
have I heard my husband (electronics engineer) use that word! Also,
I wasn't thinking in terms of the same frequency across the potency
spectrum. But, yes, I can see that the higher potencies are like an
amplification that increases the intensity without altering any
other qualities. Thanks. This answers my questions.

But I *have* heard people talk of using a higher potency to sooth an
