NAIL PATHOLOGY AND DIAGNOSTIC INDICATIONS OVERVIEW part 2 of 2 (see
also post earlier today)

============
3. TERMS in homeopathic literature for nail pathology and their
definitions from 1922 Stedmans:

===================
WORDS IN REPERTORY
--Felon—Panaris, paronychia, whitlow.
--Fungus hematodes—a soft, easily bleeding, malignant fungoid growth
--Onychia—Inflammation of the matrix with suppuration and shedding of
the nail.
Varieties
----Onychia maligna-acute onychia occurring in scrofulous children or
cachectic subjects spontaneiously or in response to slight traumatism
----Onychia parasitica--onychomycosis
--Paronychia—Felon, panaris, whitlow; inflammation of the structures in
the distal phalanx of a finger or toe, either those surrounding the
nail or the bone itself

===================
WORDS IN MATERIA MEDICA
--Panaris—Whitlow, paronychia
--Whitlow—Paronychia, panaris, felon, suppurative inflammation of the
structures in the distal phalanx of a finger or toe; it may be
superficial, involving the parts about the nail, or deep-seated,
involving the bone and periosteum.
Varieties
----Melanotic whitlow-a melanotic or pigmented sarcoma of the skin,
beginning at the border of the nail.
----Painless whitlow-Morvan’s disease (analgesic paralysis with
whitlow, a progressive paralysis and atrophy of the forearms and hands
with analgesia and the formation of painless whitlows; probably the
same as syringomyelia)

Many thanks to Andy for first part. Thanks for trying to share with us the second part, but attempting to copy it I got the symptom [not in repertory language]: discoloration - blue - right index nail. When A. says that it is long - it is REALLY long!
However, the real reason for sending this message, is that I have a very stupid question: What is the meaning of the word "hangnails"? How exactly does it look?
Please, don't frown - remember, I'm just a beginner...
TIA
Maly

((( Dear Maly, Sorry for the lengthiness--skip if you dont want it. I
compiled for handy reference to save time later. Also, there is a
function called "select all" (on mac it is "apple key a"; there will be
a similar function for PC)-which allows copy a whole email without
scrolling--thus preventing unwanted "trauma".

Dear Andy,
Thanks for the guidance about CTRL+a - it's exactly what I have done when I saw the real length and didn't want to skip! Many thanks for the admirable work you have done and shared with us. I hope you didn't take my jesting in bad part, anyway, I didn't mean to offend.
Sorry for this stupid remark, which has also taken away all the attention from the real target of the message: the stupid question what is hangnails and how does it look, for which I am still awaiting an answer from anybody of the group.
Please accept my apology

A hangnail means where the nail has begun to peel away, but has peeled down
toward the quick rather than across the grown-out part of the nail. So you
have to either pull it out of the flesh, which can be rather painful and
messy, or else clip it, which leaves a little stub. A terrific example of
"trivial yet annoying"! :-)

Are there rubrics dealing with hangnails, or???

A hangnail means where the nail has begun to peel away, but has peeled down
toward the quick rather than across the grown-out part of the nail. So you
have to either pull it out of the flesh, which can be rather painful and
messy, or else clip it, which leaves a little stub. A terrific example of
"trivial yet annoying"! :-)

Are there rubrics dealing with hangnails, or???

Interesting, thankyou! I suppose these remedies must address the *tendency*
toward hangnails (and I'd think they must be very incomplete rubrics too!),
since I can't see how a remedy culd *remove* one! (Tho maybe could help to
heal up the "felon", which is as disagreeable as its name implies, LOL!)

((( Hangnail does not appear to be either a technical medical term nor
a nail. Here is a definition and derivation:
hang·nail (hngnl)(Medicine) [Alteration of agnail (influenced by
hang).]
n. A small piece of dead skin at the side or the base of a fingernail
that is partly detached from the rest of the skin. A loose narrow
strip of skin near the base of a fingernail; tearing it produces a
painful sore that is easily infected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ag·nail (gnl)(Medicine, Biology) [Middle English angnail, corn, from
Old English angnægl : ang-, painful; see angh- in Indo-European roots +
nægl, peg, nail; see nail.]
n. 1. A hangnail. 2. A painful sore or swelling around a fingernail or
toenail.

a little sore spot at the edge of the nail, maybe where
the flesh is pulled/pushed out from beneath the nail? (This was just my
hazy impression, maybe I got that wrong.) Pulling the hangnail out of
the
flesh leaves a sore, which if it gets dirty can become infected, but
even a
felon (or what I *thought* was meant by it) is nothing more than a
nuisance,
so far as I've ever seen. And so far as I've seen infection of any
sort is
not so common (never did a survey, but am basing this entirely on
myself and
my kids)--I have never heard hangnails spoken of as anything other than
a
potentially amusing nuisance... (I suppose "amusing" because they are
both
so annoying and so trivial?)

Practically, I wonder if these rubrics are valuable as hints for
remedies [when we find such a “symptom” in a patient], or as you stated
maybe they are incomplete?
((((( Nail problems are superficial ultimates on the periphery of the
organism. But they can be INDICATORS, which was the point of the
compilation post, and in which inheres its value.

(Andy--I think all our drug talk has sent your computer into a time warp --
it thinks it's 1970 again! :-)) )

But yikes, I'm fascinated by that definition! Um, I guess I'd better stand
corrected, but *we* always called that "an little flap of skin" or some
such. Ah well, words are fun.
