Hello all,

Can anyone shed some light on how to get a patient off anti-depressants. When the patient tries to get off it, he gets depressed all the worse. (of course, following Organon!) I need some guidance here.

I was considering starting with a bit of tautopathy.... any comments?

Hi Didi,

Treat the case according to the symptoms; get a symptom picture
corresponding to the patient in an UN-medicated state, and begin
treating on that basis and slowly taper-off the anti-depressant (maybe
also a good idea to change to a lesser antidepressant, possibly herbal,
as a tapering-off tool)

With a constitutional remedy!! I wait until the patient is feeling better and happier and then cut down the antidepressant very slowly . If possible cut the tablet in half (or obtain lower dose tablets) and take 1/2 one day 1 the next for a week or 2 before going to 1/2 every day for a week or 2 , then every other day etc. The patient has to feel confident that they are better before any attempt is made.

Another approach I've heard is (also waiting until the patient is feeling
*good* on a well-suited remedy!) shaving a bit more of the tablet off each
day, for a more gradual decrease.

Hello
We this and many cases where the patient is on allopathic medication;
how do you get true picture of what the patient was like prior to
the medication. Aren't you relying alot on the patients own abilty to
remember what they were like before? In come cases particularly with
anti-depressants the patients can be on these for years, therefore it
is difficult for them to remember. I just wonder how do you get a
true picture in this instance?

you could find out what was happening for them when they went on the
medication & you could speak to family members/friends.

A very good point. All I can say is that they often come because the anti depressant is not doing the job and therefore you do have a bit of the picture. The causation - when it started - often helps to clinch the remedy. However it is sometimes dangerous to take people off allopathic medication if they are not ready for it and therefore a knowledge what is not dangerous to remove and what is must be taken into account. I often say to patients would you know if the remedy is working despite the medication and most say they would. Here you have something to go on. The reason why they come to you may not be associated directly with the reason why they have been put on the medication. Yes it is difficult to get the true picture but I feel it is our job to try as the patient has come to us with an expectation that they will get better.

Thanks for the guidance from everyone. I'll pass it all along.

This is a case with one of my grads. He only told me that the fellow was put on drugs years ago for being "nervous" because he's a very shy stammerer.

I agree with "waiting until the patient shows some improvement"
If the patient comes is because the antidepressants aren't working very well, so
you can see improvement in spite of the allopathic medication.

If the drug undergoes hepatic metabolism (many of them have), Nux vomica may be
useful as a detox.

Tautopaty is useful too, you can start with 1x and go up while you slowly taper
off the antidepressant.

With these approaches sometimes you can be without antidepressants faster.
