Medical Terminology
*******************
*Uni-*
The prefix 'Uni-' comes from the Latin word 'Unus'
which means 'One'. It does not mean 'first' like
'Prim/i' and not 'Single and alone' like 'Mon/o'.
Examples:
1. Unilateral:
The word 'Lateral' comes from the Latin word 'Latus'
which means 'side'.
So unilateral means 'one-sided'; like 'unilateral
headache'.
2. Unipotential:
'Potentia' in Latin means 'power'.
So unipotential means 'capable of producing only in
one direction'; usually used for germinal and stem
cells which are only capable in producing one type of
specialized cell.
3. Unipolar:
'Polus' in Latin means 'pole'.
So unipolar means 'having one pole'. In neurons,
unipolar means 'a nerve cell having but one process'.
4. Unicist:
Unicist means 'an advocate or adherent of a theory of
unicity'. Unicity comes from the Latin word 'Unicus'
which is also the root of the word 'Unique' meaning
'being THE ONLY one'.
In homeopathic terminology, the term was used for the
one who prescribes homeopathic remedies in this way:
'one remedy at a time, usually in high potency'.
5. Union by the first intention:
This is an old one! Here we have the definition from
Yasgur's Dictionary. Union by the first intention
means 'healing of wounds or cuts by adhesion (the
growing together of the opposite surfaces of the
wound) without suppuration or granulation. Healing by
second intention occurs when suppuration and/or
granulation is present (incarnation).' It is not used
nowadays but you can see it in old medical literature
as well as old homeopathy books.
