This prefix comes from the word 'Primus' (L) and means
'First'.
The word 'Primary' with the meaning of first and
principal comes from this root.
Examples:
1. Primigravida:
It has two parts. First part is 'Primi' and second
part is 'Gravida'. Gravida comes from the Latin word
'Gravidus' which means 'pregnant woman'. It is
interesting to note that 'Gravis' in Latin means
heavy! The word 'Gravity' also comes from this root.
So Primigravida means 'An individual pregnant for the
first time'.
2. Primipara:
The suffix '-para' comes from the Latin verb 'Parere'
which means 'to bring forth, bear'. The word
'Parturition' also comes from this root.
So Primipara means 'An individual bearing her first
offspring'.
3. Primi causa morbi:
'Causa' means cause and 'morbi' comes from 'Morbus'
which means disease.
Primi causa morbi (L) means the primary cause of
illness. This Latin combination is used by Hahnemann
in Organon.
4. Prima viae:
Viae is the plural form of Latin word 'Via' which
means 'way'. So Prima viae should mean the first ways.
It is interesting to know that in old medical
literature like some of the homeopathic books, Prima
viae means digestive tract; the primary entrance way!
5. Primum non nocere:
This Latin statement is from Hippocratic Oath which
means 'FIRST DO NOT HARM'!
