Iodine was traditionally put in to salt to make it flow better.

Vast tracks of the earth are such that there is little iodine around. This
leads to thyroid difficulty.
Interestingly enough nuts like walnuts are good source of iodine and VERY
beneficial.

Some people are allergic to iodine and of course iodized salts should be
used with extreme care by these people.
