canine question - collapsing trachea

Has anyone had experience treating a collapsing trachea in a dog?
The dog is otherwise healthy and happy (falls into the general description of a phosphorus). A 12 year old male pomeranian- he has had the 'cough' sporatically throughout his life - with vets simply noting a collapsing trachea on his records. Recently the rasping, dry, spasmodic cough has become more frequent. It occurs most often with excitement although he may awaken with it. Using both Hamilton and Wolfe books as references, I have given him spongia 6x (good results the first day and not again) and then phos 12x and 30c. There seems to be some relief - but the condition re-occurs.
Wolfe recommends using Phos in 200c various locations throughout his book, however I have never used that high a potency on an animal.
Most references (allopathic) simply explain the frequency of this 'disease' in certain breeds and list the use of sedatives and surgery (but only in younger dogs). They seem to give up entirely on the older small dogs.
Any experience, advice or directions for further reading would be greatly appreciated.
