A thought to pass on to the young girl with breast cancer (and her parents, if she's young enough to make that appropriate): When very young people get breast cancer, it indicates a strong likelihood of a genetic link, which should be checked throughout her close relatives, especially younger ones. It could be one of the BRCA gene alterations, but it could just as well simply be a general gene that promotes the development of cancerous illnesses. I have a patient now with ovarian cancer who developed breast cancer at 16, was treated and survived. She's now 34, and has had thyroid cancer, and now has metastatic ovarian cancer. It's only this last development that has prompted the family survey (because 18 years ago no one knew about the genetics of cancer). Anyone presenting at an unusually young age with a cancer usually associated with older people should have their family genetics checked to help other family members avoid developing cancer by taking preventive measures. A 40 year old woman, also one of my patients, who presented with advanced (Stage IV) colon cancer was advised to have her family checked,and it turned out that several of her close relatives had familial polyposis, as she had had, undetected, with a virtual certainly of developing colon cancer at some point.
