treating fever

Hi Rhonda,
Some time back I had sent an article called treating acute diseases. If you
get that it might help you. Unfortunately I can not locate the article. In
case you can not get that here are a few tips: When treating fevers we have
to look at the underlying disease and prescribe for that (provided there is
an underlying disease). Thus for example if the fever is accompanied with a
cold we take the symptoms of the cold add the symptoms of the fever form a
picture and then prescribe. In fevers that are pure fevers that is they are
not accompanied with any other disease there are certain things we consider
1. The mental stae: Is the patient anxious as in Ars. Acon. Ipec etc
Is the patient dull as in gels, ac-ph, opium etc. Is the patient
restless as in Rhus, Ars etc does the patient avoid movement as in Bryonia.
Is the patient irritable as in Hepar, Bry, Nux Cham Cina etc. Does the
patient want people around as phos or Ars or does he send people away as in
Bry sepia
2. Thirst: thirst may range from thirstlessness as in Puls and gels to
extreme thirst as in Bry, Phos etc.
3. Mouth: Is the mouth dry normal or moist. A patient may have dry
mouth without thist as in Bell puls, Lyc and sepia or moist tongue with
thirst as in Merc or dry mouth with thirst as in Bry, phos etc Phos may
have dryness at the centre of the tongue the edges being moist. Ipecac may
have moist tongue without thirst and so on.
4. Tongue: Is the tongue clear as in Ipecac or discolored. Ant-c, puls
Ars etc. have white tongues, Mif has a yellow base, Chel has a yellow
tongue, Rhus has a triangular red tip and so on
5. Is the fever accompanied with chill for example Hep. Ars Nux etc feel
extremely chilly as does Puls during fevers. Bry sulph etc may not feel
chilly.
6. Time: In some medicine time is the most important indication for
fever. For example 11.00 oclock of Nat-m noon of Ars 2 pm of Puls 4 pm of
Lyco 9 pm of Bry midnight of Ars 3 am of thuja etc
Time would mean the time when the fever started if the fever is recent or
the time when the fever is at its peak if it is more than 24 hours. Some
medicines are specially indicated by time for example when Lyc is indicated
you may get nothing except the fact that the fever started at 4.00 pm
7. If the fever is attended with some other disease for example a sore
throat you will need to take the modalities of that disease for example is
the pain better by warmth or cold is the cold better indoors or outdoors and
so on.
Usually after taking into consideration these symptoms we should be able to
prescribe with confidence. If you are sure of your remedy high potencies
work much better than low. For example in Dengue fever if you give a low
potency it may take 24 to thirty six hours for the patient to recover
completely but a dose of 10 M gets rid of the fever like magic (That is
after one hour of aggravation you can see the magic).
If the fever recurs you need to give a constitutional remedy and that is
another story altogether. Some medicines I have found most indicated in
recurrent fevers in children are (in order of importance) Cina, Sulph,
Tuber, Med, Lyco, Sepia, Nat-m Silicia.
Best regards
Elham
