Homeopathy during Pregnancy

I have a patient who is now pregnant. She was responding nicely to Aur-m-n, and has now written to tell me that she plans to stop taking it and any other homeopathic remedies because she's convinced that the fetus is a separate person and must need constitutional treatment different from what she needs, and that she fears harming her baby by imprinting on it the "miasm" of the remedy she's taking for her own needs. The remedy still corresponds to her symptom picture, and she is still responding well to it.
I shared with her the chapter from Dana Ullman's e-book in which he says that while no formal tests have been conducted, over 200 years' history of safe use of homeopathic remedies is convincing evidence in itself that homeopathy is safe for pregnant women. Her reply was that she saw that only as applying to symptoms arising directly from the pregnancy, not to constitutional symptoms of the mother. I know I've never seen any warnings about pregnant women having to stop constitutional treatment and suffer with their symptoms during pregnancy to protect the unborn child. But I'm having trouble actually finding a source that says that in so many words. Can anyone point me to one I can copy and send her, or, alternatively, share their authoritative experience as a specialist in prenatal homeopathic treatment? (Or, if I'm wrong and women really should not continue constitutional treatment during pregnancy, it would be most useful to find some authorititave guidance on that as well.... ) Many thanks. Rosemary

Hi Rosemary,
this might not be what you're looking for, but some thoughts: Altho the
mother and child are spiritually separate, they certainly aren't physically
separate. The baby's nutrition depends upon the mother's ability to take it
from her food and pass it along. If the mother isn't healthy, the baby will
be compromised.
I was taught that pregnancy is an especially powerful time for chronic care,
because one can "move thru" states and issues faster than normal, because
everything is so intensified. I was told that the mother's state can
express what is needed by the *baby*, as distinct from anything she would
have needed on her own. I don't think it really makes sense to speak of a
mother's or fetus' needs separate from each other -- how much more linked
could they *be*?

Sorry that i step in this mail...
this is a subject that has my interest also.
But the mother is treated for a particular illness or problem, i suppose
the baby does not have the same, so what are the thoughts on
that? doesn't the baby pick up the wrong vibes from the remedy that he
really does not need himself?

Gee, Rosemary, common sense suggests the fetus would be in worse shape if
mom doesn't get the remedy she needs. But it doesn't sound as if your
patient is likely to accept anything short of an ultimatum from On High.

This is true -- I was looking for something she would perceive as being unassailably authoritative, based on extensive experience working with pregnant women. I've of course already told her my opinion, that of course mother and child are united at this stage... but she doesn't see it that way at all -- interesting. I'm sure there's a rubric in here (ideas fixed??) Actually, I've been rather surprised at how little seems to have been written on the subject, which I would have expected to be exhaustively covered somewhere in the literature.
Thanks. Rosemary

Hi Marleen,
It is an interesting question... i guess I'm willing to go with the
epirical findings, which have been (or so I was told) that constitutional
treatment during pregnancy is good for both mama and baby. Again, I really
don't see how they can be reasonably seen as separate...
Along similar lines, some (many? most? few? don't know) homeopaths will
administer remedies to a nursing baby by giving the remedy to the *mother*,
and letting the baby get it thru the milk. I've never heard of it causing
problems, and i certainly found it to work well with my own two. I guess
that's all I could say. It seems to work...
Best,
Shannon

Dear Rosemary,
Sorry in advance if this is prying in details of your
practice. When you said you have given the remedy aur
m n, why would you want to repeat ?(unless in LM). I
read in some book that pregnant woman should receive
remedies in very high potencies like cm. In that case
where is the question of her being concerned about
taking it as you would have administered it in your
clinic itself ? An all mineral remedy like aur m n
will act well over a month. Just a thought.
Regards
Venkat

Dear Rosemary et al,
If you benefit the health of the mother - you benefit the health of
the child. In the footnote to aphorism 284 of the 6th Organon (sometimes
disputed because it was written in R. Haehl's handwriting) there is a
discussion about treating pregnant mothers. Haehl's said this material
comes from dictations Hahnemann made to assistants that he faithful
reproduced. I don't see why Haehl, and man with a good reputation, would
come up with this idea himself.
"However, the care of mothers in their first pregnancy is
indispensable. This should be done by means of a gentle antipsoric
treatment with sulphur in the new [fifty-millesmial) dynamization described
in this edition (aph 270). This will eradicate the psora in the mother and
in the fruit of her womb. Psora (which is the engendered of most chronic
diseases) has already been imparted to mothers through inheritance and its
is almost always present in them. By treating mothers in this way, their
progeny may be protected against psora in advance. This is so true that the
children of pregnant women who are so treated come into the world far
healthier and more robust - to everyone's amazement. This is another
confirmation of the great truth of my psora theory."
I am not suggesting that every new mother is given sulphur but the
general idea of treating the constitution and miasms of the mother to
protect and improvement the health of the child is an interesting point
that deserves some thought. Over the almost three decades I have done
homoeopathy I have found treating pregnant women a very beneficial and feel
it strengthen both mother and child.

Hello all,
Give every pregnant mother very high potencies like CM???? I would
think each and every case should be individualized according to the
sensitivity of the mother, the nature of the symptoms being treated, and
the nature of the remedy. The duration of a homeopathic remedy is not
fixed. It depends on the nature of the patient and the disease state as
well as time and circumstances. Nevertheless, you are correct about the
deep acting nature of Aur-m-n and other mineral remedies. When 1 or 2 tiny
poppy seed size pills of a C or LM potency used in a medicinal solution
they can be used as a single dose in a strikingly progressing improvement
or repeat in a split dose to speed the cure of slowly progressing cases.
All these posology questions must be individualized. There is no one method
that suits all patients.
