TOOLS & TECHNIQUES: Significance of Rubrics in Kent and other
Repertories
The word `congestion' appears in the chapters HEAD, UTERUS,
GENERALITIES etc. When and where to make use of this rubric?
When two or more complaints co-exist in a part of the body,
those two or more symptoms are not to be repertorised as two separate
and distinct symptoms. E.g., a patient complains of headache,
vertigo and uneasiness in the head. This is to be grouped as such
and the rubric `congestion' in the chapter HEAD must be
pressed into
service.
A patient complains of corns in soles, cramps in calves,
swelling of feet, knee pain etc. all in lower limbs. Now, all the
complaints are in the leg. For this when we look into KENT'S
Repertory (page 965) we read `CONGESTED. (See Blood.)". So,
we turn
to p.93 and find the following:
BLOOD…RUSH OF … to
Lower Limbs: AUR., calc., elaps, zinc.
Legs: Lact., meph., nux-m., phos., SPONG, SULPH.,
zinc.
The next step is to read these remedies (that we got thru'
repertories) in (1) Samuel Lilienthal's HOMEOPATHIC THERAPEUTICS;
and/or (2) HERING'S GUIDING SYMPTOMS (10 VOLUMES). In the
latter,
the chapters that enable us to pinpoint the remedy for the patient
are `MIND' `TISSUES' and `STAGES OF LIFE,
CONSTITUTION'
We talk and write so many things on homeopathy. But the
foremost is correct selection of the remedy—the simillimum. The
ultimate aim is to cure the patient with the simillimum. Once this
is done successfully homeopathy can prosper and become popular
speedily. But none talk on `how to select the remedy.'l.
There is
cure for every curable disease. In other words, if at all a disease
can be cured in any stage by any medical system in the world, then
that disease can equally and certainly be cured by homeopathy
2. Homeopathy is an exact & accurate system. Precision is its
culture. You cannot alter or change the methods in homeopathy. But
you have to adopt yourself to the requirements here. This is more or
so in the case of CASE TAKING and FINDING THE REMEDY through the
repertory, materia medica etc. Then you can be No. homeopath at the
top of the world. Not otherwise.
3. Limitations: Unless there is a direct contact between the
patient and the homeopathic doctor, a case cannot be treated and
cured by posting the case in any discussion group. Because, you may
think that you had taken all the symptoms in a case, whereas, you
might have in reality ignored, rather considered some points as
symptoms at all!
4. Most important of all, a prescription in homeopathy is ;made
on 'uncommon' symptoms and/or general symptoms.' Such 'uncommon'
or 'general' symptom in a case may be one or at the most two only.
Explanatory note on 'uncommon symptoms':
Case 1: A patient was suffering from malaria and was treated by
allopaths and homeopaths for years in vain. The chill-fever-sweat
paroxysms appeared daily evening. But ever since the onset of
malaria he complained of pain in chest in the forenoon. Now, every
doctor of other medical systems would only and simply the chest
pain. (Or, he may treat it separately.). What doctors of other
systems ignore, we consider as important in homeopathy.
Calvin B. Knerr's Repertory: (page 1096) Fever, intermittent
apyrexia: . . . pain in chest, Sabad.
Sabadilla-l000, single dose gave gradual relief and in a week's time
malaria stopped completely. The patient reported relapse after three
months when the same remedy was given in l0M potency, single dose.
Now it is more than seven years and there is no relapse.
Dosage is not a problem. It is correct selection of the remedy that
matters most. We state this to those who have a genuine interest to
learn things exactly & accurately. If precision is your culture,
then you can be No.l homeopathic doctor in the world.
In the above case of malaria, pain in chest is not commonly seen in
malaria patients and that symptom helped to find the remedy for the
patient.
Case 2: The case of an epileptic boy--six year old child, son of a
Professor of homeopathy was brought to me. For half-an-hour the
professor narrated what all tests were done in allopathic hospitals,
what all homeopathic medicines were tried one after the other. (The
greatest difficulty for a homeopathic doctor in the world is in
treating another homeopath or his relatives already treated by that
homeopath.) I asked the Professor to bring his wife (mother of the
child). He insisted that he has told me "all the symptoms of the
boy." On my repeatedly insisting he half-heartedly brought his
wife. (I told the professor that HE SHOULD NOT AT ALL INTERRUPT till
I finish talking with her.) I just asked her to tell me about his
son.
She talked for ten minutes. (No useful 'uncommon' symptom came
out.) At the end, with her raised eyebrows and leaning towards me,
she exclaimed, "Doctor, why is that every time he sits in the commode
while passing stool he invariably get the fits (convulsion). Now,
doctors of all systems of medicine would ignore this symptom. But it
is a gem for prescribing in homeopathy.
page 577 of Calvin B. Knerr's Repertory: During stool, convulsion:
Art. v.
Artemisia vulgaris-lM, single dose, made gradual decrease in the
intensity of convulsions and in ten days time it stopped completely.
Six months later there was relapse. Artemisia vulgaris-10M, single
dose was given. Now it is more than twelve years. No relapse of
epilepsy.
(The reader may kindly note that the above two cases are posted NOT
TO STATE THAT CALVIN B. KNERR'S REPERTORY IS SUPERIOR TO OTHER
REPERTORIES. Each repertory has its scope and limitation. When to
use what repertory is a separate subject of study.)
Case 3: A lady of 34 years came to me with large dropsical swelling
of the whole left leg. (elephantiasis). I just and only asked her
how long she is having. She replied that it started fourteen years
ago while she was pregnant.
I gave a remedy by selecting in Kent's Repertory. Did not show any
change. Then I decided my selection was wrong. So now I consulted
Boericke's Repertory:
Boericke's Repertory: SKIN: Elephantiasis--Anac.; Ars.; Calo.; Card.
m.; Elae.; Graph.; Ham.; Hydrocotyle.; Iod.; Lyc.; Myris.; Sil
Now I study all these remedies in Boericke's Materia Medica.
(Materia Medica can be studied with the aid of a repertory.) While
doing so, the following words under the remedy CARDUUS MARIANUS made
me to pause:
"Dropsical conditions due to pelvic congestion..."
If we recall what the lady said, we would confirm Carduus for this
case. She said that it started fourteen years when she was
pregnant. This means the complaint has relevance to or connection
with uterus or pelvis.
Carduus mar.200 was given single dose. She reported three weeks
later. For two weeks there was gradual decrease in the swelling and
after that no further progress. Carduus-l0M single dose was given.
In a week's time there was 90% relief. After waiting for a month I
gave the remedy in l0-M single dose and she is near normal now.
