Dear Alva,
More or less stream of consciousness ideas/reps just on what has been
given; not exhaustive, but I hope useful. Sometimes (for us in the
peanut gallery) it is useful to try to figure out a case without
confirmatories and just on what is presented (as much as that is
possible) as practice for cases with scanty sx.
Best,
Andy
Some that could be studied if have eliminated everything else that is
more familiar and easily confirmed/eliminated (eg Lach, Lyc, nat-m,
calc-p (ailments from car accidents), calc-ars (which I know has been
given) etc) is
***squilla maritima -- paroxysmal cough with rattling and tendency to
watery swelling (including pulmonary) (and asthma with paroxysmal
cough). No yellow/orange stool but always the chance that this is an
outlier symptom and one not in the books.
**** antimonium ars- (comparable to Lach)-- worthy of study.

***colch- orange stool and pulmonary edema but mostly a gout oriented rx
***chel (similar to Lyc (if lyc has been eliminated)) has orange stool
and pulmonary edema--overbearing person with pain under R scapula-- a
liver oriented rx
**op- maybe needed first because the car accident was terrifying
(speculation)( although it has no real symptomatic bearing to the
peculiars or much of the case at all)
(this is an aside of a wandering mind)--if the pylorus is involved (and
we have not evidence that it is)
opium does affect that area of the tract (as an aside here a story by Borland)
Borland
A striking point about the Opium pains is the manner in which the
patients describe them, saying that the actually feel that they have an
obstruction. The man I mentioned said he felt as if his stomach
contracted and tried to force the contents through a narrow outlet which
seemed to be blocked; the whole process was then reversed, the contents
swished back into the other end of the stomach and came up his throat,
he could not control it and the fluid simply poured out.
After he became convalescent, this patient had a recurrence of a
similar sensation in his pyloric region. He described this as though
there were a tight band narrowing his pylorus, and as though his food
could not get through it, and he insisted on having another X - ray
(which was negative) to see if he had not got adhesions tying down his
duodenum and obstructing the passage. Opium entirely cleared up this
symptom and he had no recurrence. This is the commonest description of
Opium that will be given.

Kali phosphoricum belongs to the mineral kingdom. It is a tubercular remedy.
The central feeling of Kali phosphoricum is: "I am not loved by the
very family (or group) on whom I depend for support". It is like the
situation of a woman who has to take care of her children
single-handedly, while her husband, on whom she depends for support, is
always travelling. He is never there for her. She feels unloved and
neglected. She feels that she is not getting the support she needs from
her family. If this situation persists and she has difficulties in
coping, she can become nervous and sensitive, affected by trifles, she
can be always edgy, and gets startled by the slightest of sounds. She is
tremendously anxious for the children and apprehensive about their
health and about the future. On the other hand she may become irritable
towards her husband and children. She is angry with them because they
don't support her; she could become indifferent towards them and manage
to be quite independent.
Her mind is full of thought and activity, and she develops insomnia
(Kali phosphoricum is one of the main remedies for insomnia).
Ultimately, she becomes tired and worn out. Her senses become dull and
she cannot use her mind anymore. Hence Kali phosphoricum is found under
the rubric:
• Work seems to drive him crazy, owing to the impotency of
his mind.
When coped up, Kali phosphorus persons are friendly, especially to
outsiders, cheerful, expressive, sympathetic and caring for others. They
can be independent and still very supportive of their family and cooperative.
Kali phosphoricum patients can have very frightening dreams. One
patient narrated a dream where a tiger was knocking at the door of her
house, while she was alone with her children, and her husband was away.
She had to protect her children all by herself. This dream shows the
extreme anxiety of Kali, and a very important Phosphorus feature, caring
for others.
Another Kali phosphorus situation would be that of a businessman
who finds that he has been let down by his partners suddenly, and he is
left to face things all by himself. He doesn't have the support he so
desperately needs. He tries his best to manage the business by himself,
but soon gets worn out.

because they seem too large. Unconsciousness, with no wants except
thirst. Fear of being poisoned or sold. When spoken to replies properly,
but delirium and unconsciousness immediately return. Desire to uncover

flushed. Teeth encrusted with brown mucus.
Clean, parched, dry tongue. Much thirst. Hiccough, with spasms and
rumbling in the abdomen and foam at the mouth.
Urine scanty or retained, or passed involuntarily in bed, leaving
streaks of red sand on the sheets.
Sleeplessness from nervous irritation.
Subsultus tendinum. Picking at the bed - clothes. Convulsions.
Spasms. Attack comes on suddenly without apparent cause.
The symptoms of the stools of Hyos. are sufficiently unlike those
of any other remedy to make the choice easy, but the accompanying
symptoms make it certain.

Essence: Reproduce success in order to hold on to love.
--Reproducing success to hold on to love -
They feel they have to continue their success whatever opposition
they may encounter. Otherwise people, particularly their partner, won't
accept them anymore and will leave them for the sake of someone else.
But it is not easy to maintain their success, there are predators all
around and they have to be on their guard all the time. By relying on
the old and trusted methods they hope to be able to continue their
artistic or scientific career, because they are convinced that only
successful people will be loved.
Forging success at the cost of losing love
When love is withdrawn they may seek compensation in their success.
If they won't be loved they might at least get praised. They escape from
the troubles in their marriage and throw themselves into their work,
which is after all their strong side. They are very good artists or
scientists etc. But even here they have to face the fact that there are
newcomers on their way to the top who might soon take over. Holding on
to the old ways is the only hope they have got to keep their position.
In extreme cases they might even falsify scientific data in order to
keep on presenting something new and interesting to the public.
--Powerless against your partner -
They feel powerless in front of their partner, or in front of
powerful and authoritarian figures in general. They feel they can't talk
to or get through to them. And when their partner talks to other women
or flirts with the opposite sex they feel even more powerless and
jealous. But they won't leave him because they haven't got the strength.
They can't stand the sight of other women who follow their partner like
a little lamb. This situation might come about from having a very
dominating father.
A powerless partner
Or they choose a partner who is very weak and who can't maintain
his position at work. They prefer to marry someone who has a creative
profession, so they can easily be the stronger of the two. They want
their own work to be better than their partner's and they often use his
'meagre' creations as a comparison against their own brilliance. They
may even use his success to create an even bigger success for
themselves. They can also be quite bitchy towards their partner if he
doesn't do exactly as they say. Thus the partner will often feel weak
and threatened in his own creative career.
But on the other hand they don't have any respect for men who are
too docile.

Max, age 40, was burned out. A telephone cable repair supervisor
from St. Louis, he was just plain exhausted not to mention discouraged
with his life and with a job requiring long hours on the road. He
described himself as a simple, down to earth man in a hustle bustle job.
Bored and overwhelmed with his job of 12 years, he also felt distant
from his girlfriend. Stress at work and more stress at home. It just
felt like too much. Max told us he felt "like two hammers beating on me
at the same time".
A great hindsight critic, Max had a litany inside his head about
what he could have or should have done differently. A constant second
guesser when it came to all of his perceived mistakes, he complained of
below-average self-esteem. Bombarded with decision-making, he based his
choices on fear rather than intuition. Filled with self-doubt, he never
felt he had "enough on the ball" to succeed in his undertakings. This
led Max to have a "I'd better take what I can get" philosophy about his
possibilities and capabilities. Although he had begun to interview for
another job, he never felt "he had a ghost of a chance" of being hired
elsewhere. The truth was that Max's employers placed a lot of value on
his expertise but he never believed it. He described himself as a "half
empty kind of guy".
The product of a typical Midwestern farm family, Max felt unjustly
punished by his father. "I got the message that I couldn't do anything
right and it stuck with me". Like glue. Max's feeling about his life was
one of total loss, failure, and helplessness. When he felt the worst, he
was gripped by a tight feeling in the chest and a loss of appetite.
Rather than look at what he could change in his environment or what role
others played in his disappointments, Max pointed the finger at himself,
just as his father had done to him. His inner dialogue went like this"
"What can I do to improve myself? I thought I was trying but I guess I'm
not doing it well enough."
Ultimately Max felt quite desperate and anxious as well as clueless
about how to remedy his life. He called himself a "defeatist" but could
not figure out how to pull himself out of his pit. He lamented, "I've
failed in so many ways, made so many stupid decisions in my life. I mull
things over to death, afraid of making the wrong decision." Everyone is
dissatisfied with me. It's too much to bear." When we asked what was
unusual about him, he answered, "I'm a nobody. I know that's a pretty
sad statement but that's how I feel. Wrung through the wringer"
Max had never done well in school, mostly C's, D's, znd F's, even
though he was an intelligent man. Convinced that he would fail, he
panicked before tests and inevitably was the last to finish. Awkward in
social situations,
