Dear Mr. Venkatasubramanian, You have missed the point that I was
stressing. Correct knowledge of the use of Lilienthal, Boericke, Kent,
Hering's Guiding Symptoms t)en volumes) , Calvin B. Knerr's Repertory etc.
are more than sufficient to select the remedy for any patient. With these
we had no failures at all at hitting the remedy. But no homeopath wants to
learn, and know the exact uses of Organon and the above reference works.
Only if we fail in selecting the remedy for any patient with Boericke,
Yingling, Lilienthal, Knerr and Kent, we have to talk of research,
re-classification etc. When the above books are more than sufficient, why
not at once learn the correct methods of using these books.
Whether Lilienthal's is a compilation work or not why to bother about these
things. When it offers help in cases where other repertories fail WHY NOW
WE LEARN the correct use of Lilienthal. I have been teaching homeopathy for
over three decades and my students have no regrets so far because they are
yet to come across a case for which a remedy cannot be found with the use of
the above reference books. Therefore, my students do not oparticipate in
any discussion group or association meeting etc. because when they start
talking about Lilienthal, correct use of Boericke, Kent etc. no one wants to
listen to him.
The only question is whether homeopaths want to know the exact and accurate
method of using the above reference books to minimise their failures or they
still want to grope in the dark.

I'm sad to say that, of the books you mention, only Boericke, Kent, and
Hering are familiar to me. How does one learn about the others?

Boericke and Kent are secondary sources. They are talking only from

Knerr's work is a repertory of Hering's Guiding Symptoms
Yingling wrote a magnificent Accoucher's manual.

I'd also add Nash's Leaders to any must-read list.

Look at my "Heritage." Read Woodbury's essay (contained therein)
about the needed books in homeopathic literature.
The old guys were THAT good because they really knew all the books.

Most homeopaths today are illiterate.

I will read your book and come back.
Menatime, you said Lilienthal is based on Jahr's work. But, as I see
it is a mammoth collection of cured as well as key symptoms,sort of
specific mm for each disease names. (as he himself acknowledged). I
saw in one article where Lilienthal asks Kent whether one particular
rx (forgot what- sepia ?) is better lying down
which Kent had mentioned. And Lilienthal says he will correct it in
his 'therapeutics'.
As I have not seen Jahr's work myself, is it in the same pattern ?
Amusing how a repertory can look like a therapeutic work .

first of all:

- Jahr's Symptomen-Codex (one of my absolute favourites!)
- Jahr's Handbuch (the Manual)
- Stapf's Archiv
- Lippe 's Charakteristika
- Mezger's Klinische Materia Medica
etc. etc.

For the Background:

- Hahnemann's gesammelte Schriften (collected writings)
- Organon-Synopse (all 6 editions compared; a wonderful work - a huge
volume: on the left side the aphorims of the editions 1-3, right side of
the editions 4-6. So with a glance you can see what has changed in each
aphorism over the decades. - Price was very high in the beginning: 300
Euros!! now they dropped it to 100 Euros])
- Tischner's Geschichte der Homoeopathie
- Hahnemannn's Krankenjournale
etc.etc.

BTW:
I now have a couple of Organons - several German, English, a
multi-lingual one (German, English, French, Spanish), etc.

It's interesting to dig into them, looking at it from the various angles
of different translators.

The Organon translated by Bernhardt Fincke, published from Great Auk by
our undefatigable JW, is another one I really like. On the left side you
have the aphorisms, on the right side the referring footnotes. So much
easier to read than many other versions. Those of you who are not able
to ready German fluently, would be well advised to have several versions
of English Organons to be able to compare. Fincke's 'rough draft' is
almost a 'word-for-word translation, and, as such, many paragraphs
retain that peculiar "backward construction" of German to English
translations' (as JW comments).

Old-fashioned style, perhaps, but well worth reading.

It is, obviously, greatly enlarged and appended by Lillienthal who
had a prodigious memory for detail. The edition I have is thec1890
3rd edition. The first was in 1878-- and I'll try to find the intro
to it.
Just in the layout! They are all the same-- just different methods of
indexing the information!

Maybe you can tell us more about the Jahr work. As I said to venkat,
I've heard that Lilienthal re-worked Jahr to get his "Therapeutics"
but which one? The Symptomen-Codex I have is a Materia Medica first
and then a repertory. Same with the Manual. Which work of Jahr's did
Lilienthal use as a base?
Oh! Just heap on the praise!
Actually, a friend is finding many small errors in it-- seems like in
several places Fincke crossed out a word, and then put a series of
dots under it. That is old mark for what is now "Stet" (let stand as
is). So in a few places a word has been removed which should have
been there.
I'm slowly going through it and will send corrections to all who bought it.
There are not many, but ANY is not a happy prospect for me!

Dear Julian,
My Bjain copy is the reprint the fifth and last American edition.

The enlargement and addition of symptoms were completed with the
third edition of 1890 where in the intro, The elder Lilienthal
mentions the invaluable help received from his son , James E
Lilienthal. Fourth and fifth were just reprints as the prefaces for
these has no mention about improvements.
