As and when we intend having a scientific discussion about allergy, we must, first of all, know as to what do we mean by: -

1. Allergy

2. Allergen

3. Anaphylaxis

4. Histamine

An effort will be made to quote the definitions of the said terms in the easiest possible manner. Most of these definitions have been taken from the Concise Medical Dictionary, Oxford University Press, 1980. These have though been abridged and simplified.
ALLERGY*
It is a disorder in which the body becomes hypersensitive to one or more particular allergens, which provoke the appearance of characteristic symptoms whenever subsequently encountered, whether inhaled, ingested, injected or otherwise contacted. According to the inbuilt-defence provided by Allah in the human body, antibodies in the blood stream and tissues react with and destroy these allergens causing no trouble. In an allergic person, however, the reaction of allergen leads to cell damage, release of histamine, inflammation and all other symptoms of that particular allergy. Different allergies afflict different tissues and may have either local or general effects, varying from asthma and hay fever to severe dermatitis or gastroenteritis or extremely serious anaphylaxis.

ALLERGEN*

It will not now be difficult to understand as to what allergens are. These are the causes of allergy in a hypersensitive person. Allergens are diverse and affect different tissues and organs. Pollens, dust, fur, feathers and mould may cause hay fever, house mites have been implicated in some forms of asthma, drugs, cosmetics, dyes and a host of other chemicals cause rashes and dermatitis, some food-allergens may cause diarrhea or constipation or stimulate acute bacterial food poisoning. It is utmost important that a patient’s allergen should be identified. Without getting it done, it shall not be possible to attempt desensitization to alleviate or prevent allergic attacks.

ANAPHYLAXIS*

It is an abnormal reaction to a particular allergen, in which histamine is released from tissues and causes either local or widespread symptoms. An allergic attack is an example of localized anaphylaxis. Rarer, but much more serious, is anaphylaxis shock; an extreme and generalized allergic reaction in which widespread histamine release causes oedema, constriction of the bronchioles, heart failure, circulatory collapse and sometimes death.

HISTAMINE*

This compound is found in nearly all tissues of the body. It has pronounced pharmacological activity, causing dilation of blood vessels and contractions of smooth muscles, for example of lungs. It is an important mediator of inflammation and is released in large amounts after skin damage, such as that due to animal venom and toxins, producing a characteristic skin reaction, consisting of flushing or a flare. Histamine is also released in anaphylactic reactions and allergic conditions, including asthma, and gives rise to some of the symptoms of these conditions.

IDENTIFICATION OF ALLERGENS

Now when we have, hopefully, understood as to what allergy is, we must have noted that first prerequisite for its treatment should be the identification of allergen. This is something which must be done as a first step no matter what system of medicine one is following, may be it is allopathic medicines, homoeopathy, oriental medicines / “tibb” or chinese medicines. There are various definite, old and modern and cheap and sophisticated and costly, methods of identifying the allergens. We shall not go into their details but would like to emphasize that a sure treatment of allergy can not be made without determining the allergen. So have it identified either by referring you patient to “Allergy Center” or by conducting the test yourself in your clinic.

TREATMENT

Once an allergen has been identified, it becomes easy to cure allergy. To attain the cure is comparatively easier in homoeopathy. For this, desensitization is done first when one doze of Nux Vom 200C is administered, as first thing in the morning on first day of treatment. Second day of treatment goes without any medicine. Then, from third day onwards, the patient is treated on the basis of symptoms and allergen.

Following are a few famous remedies, which are now being widely used for curing various symptoms of allergy and allergens: -

1. Pollen 30C: Three doses, thrice a day, empty stomach, for five / six days, if pollen is identified as allergen.

2. Dust 30C: Three doses thrice a day if the dust is determined as the cause.

3. Galphimia Glauca 12X: Three doses a day for allergic vas-motor affliction of the nose.

4. Histamine Hydrochloricum 30C: Three doses a day for nervous allergies.

5. Cortisone 30C: Three doses a day for psoric types of allergies.

I was perhaps the first to bring ‘hand made potencies’ of these medicines from England some six years ago. I have been administering these medicines very successfully, of course on the basis of symptoms. On my suggestion, first two of these five medicines have recently been imported from Germany and are now available in Pakistan. I have not though used these two medicines imported from Germany.

The following medicines are traditionally used in homoeopathy for curing various symptoms of allergy. The normal-cure-time from aforesaid and following medicines is five / six days: -

1. Tubercolinum 200C: One doze once a day as first thing in the morning if allergy is due to milk and milk products, eggs, cooked animal food and dyes etc.

2. Pulsatilla 30C: Three doses daily if oils etc is the allergen.

3. Petroselinum 30C: Three doses daily if fats etc is the allergen.

4. Sacharum Off 30C: Three doses daily if allergy is due to sugar or sugar- products.

5. Sulfur 30C: Three dozes daily if feather happens to be the cause.

6. Psorinum 200C: One dose daily if wheat or wheat-products are identified as allergens.

Tubercolinum and Sulfur are considered as “head remedies”.

By using all these medicines in the aforesaid manner on the basis of the symptoms, we can, I am sure, cure allergy and establish the supremacy of homoeopathy.
