As you probably know.....
Nitrate (NO3) comes into water supplies through the nitrogen cycle rather
than via dissolved minerals. It is one of the major ions in natural waters.
Most nitrate that occurs in drinking water is the result of contamination
of ground water supplies by septic systems, feed lots, and agricultural
fertilizers. Nitrate is reduced to nitrite in the body. The US EPA?s MCL
for nitrate is 10 mg/l.
Treatment
Reverse osmosis will remove 92 - 95% of the nitrates and/or nitrites. Anion
exchange resin will also remove both as will distillation.
RO & distillation only reduces - I don't know of any that totally remove
This NSF page gives some details about the different certifications
http://www.nsf.org/newsletters/waterwor ... page6.html
Important to be sure the filter you are buying is certified by them in one
of their classifications
The following treatment methods have been approved by EPA for removing
nitrates/nitrites: Ion exchange, Reverse Osmosis, Electrodialysis. I don't
think ion exchange or electodialysis is available for your home, just for
community water supply locations.
As far as I know you can only reduce nitrates at your home, not totally
remove them.
