re: Menstruation

hello all
nuneries, .....
Being a woman who is a nun, and has lived in "nunnery" like situations
(when I underwent my sannyasi training in a cloistered ashram) I can report
that, YES, A FEW women do stop menstruating while in those situations.
Reasons as far as I can see:
1) lowered nutrition (in our cloister-ashram-training we were on a very
low-key diet & bare nutrition)
2) intense spiritual-psychic environment.
(a) this could be sort of likened to "external sensory deprivation"
in the sense that we had only our immediate environment to interact with
and ourselves. With such a narrow scope of external imput (as is intended)
we focus, inevitably on our inner selves. This intensifies the inner pychic
as well as inner spiritual experience. - In plain words - we our constantly
"bumping up against" everyone else's psyche which sometimes leads to a lot
of head-on emotional uproars (to put it politely) Let's just say, it burns
a lot of karma in the shortest space possible !! !!
Such an intense
psychic-emotional environment may lead to ammenorrhea.
(b) the reason behind what Dr. Saini might have been alluding to --
: According to yogik-tantrik-ayuvedic philosophy, there are 7 dhatus or
bodily elements. Starting with food- it turns into chyle- then processes
through 6 more steps (I'm not well versed in ayurveda, & don't have the
correct order) such as blood, fat, bone, bone marrow, then "semen" ( In
this ayurvedic context the term "semen" is non-gender, & refers to "sexual
fluids -the formation of the egg or sperm" ) . Lastly the final step
is "shukra" loosely translated as "lymph".
Now, shukra is the considered the subtlest substance in the body
and is the food for the brain, thus a necessary element for
spiritual-intellectual work. The amount of shukra made by the body will
depend on how much "stuff" is leftover after "semen" has been created.
That is, in a simplified explanation: the food you eat is step by
step transformed into the different dhatus. Each dhatu takes what it needs
for its work. Whatever is "leftover" is then used for the next dhatu, and
so on. So whatever is "leftover" after making "semen" is used to make "shukra".
For those people (male or female) who direct their energies
intensely into their spiritual and mental (ie intellectual, not emotional)
work, they will be needing / using/ more shukra. Therefore there will be
less "semen" (the substance needed for the formation of shukra) available
for sexual activity/ development. And for the same reason, such persons
find they prefer to refrain from sexual activity in order to "conserve
semen" for its transformation into "shukra" (ie celibacy)
Thus we find that A FEW (not all, believe me) women stop their
periods in cloistered situations. Similarly we may find that men lose their
sexual appetite. (... and for some, intensified!!!
)
Also the wives of men who prefer to "burn the midnight oil"
devoting themselves to their studies, books, libraries and other
intellectual pursuits may now understand why they are sleeping alone at
night....
Such lonely wives should sabatoge their husbands computers
to turn off at 9pm!!!! (ha ha !)
In the case of women, there is little "free choice" about the
amount of sexual fluid lost through her monthly periods. But in the case of
men, there is scope to control the amount of semen used in sexual activity.
There could be a lot of interesting discussion on the consequences of these
facts. But I'm getting long-winded and digressing, so I'll leave you to
ponder it yourselves.
When one understands that there is a link between the amount of
"semen" produced and shukra, one can understand why celibacy /or lowered
libido / is preferred for those who have intense spiritual-intellectual
lives. One also can see why there is some grain of truth in the "old wives
tale" regarding low intelligence (intellectual activity) & masterbation or
sexual over-indulgence & disease. Perhaps this is the deeper reasons why in
many old cultures, over-indulgence and masterbation were looked down upon
and there are (used to be) many mores and customs to regulate social
behavior. In conclusion, for health and well-being, the householder
family-yogi follows Krsna's advice in the Bhagavad Gita: "be balanced" and
"moderation in all activities".
Lastly, in any case, it is abnormal for a woman between the ages of
menarche & menopause (and not pregnant) not to menstruate, and the
situation should be addressed as a medical problem.
