An interesting case

Dear Group,

I would like to have the opinion of the group about
the case that i am currently treating. The case has
responded well till now, i.e. a lot of improvement has
taken place but the first Rx would go only that far.
I would like to change the Rx now for which i need
some suggestions.

The person is a 26 year old extremely intelligent
young man. Has the best possible professional
qualifications available in India. Is obsessed with
thinking and theorizing. Keeps developing theories
about profound things such as nature of God,
relationships, causes of the ills affecting the
world, loopholes in the philosophies of the world's
greatest philosophers etc. etc. He always keeps
bombarding anyone who is willing to listen with these
grand theories of his. The theories are presented in a
very convoluted and abstract manner with very complex
themes and sub-themes runningthrough them. Has the
desire to be recognised as one of the greatest minds
the world has ever seen. Is a good story writer also
and dreams of winning the Booker Prize and Nobel Prize
one day. But the problem is he tries to convince all
his acquaintances of his greatness and his mental
prowess. He had a relationship with a girl earlier.
Even his love letters to her were full of his esoteric
theories. He used to tell her that their physical
relationship also was an expression of the spiritual
love that they had for one another. The girl, it seems
was frightened and dumped him for some one else who
was his fellow student at the same college. This had a
very damaging impact upon our friend. He almost
collapsed psychologically thinking of suicide etc. But
he recovered with the help of counselling sessions and
personal support by a senior Research Scholar at his
college whom he respected very much.

His ego having been severely jolted, he wanted to
prove to the girl what a great personality she has
rejected. So he did not participate in the campus
placement facility at his college which would have
landed him a very highly paid and respected job by
Indian standards . He has started a social work
initiative with the help of some of his friends at the
college and keeps telling everyone how selfless he is,
how he feels for the poor, how he has decided to
sacrifice a glorious career for the sake of the poor
and so on. But to me ( his counsellor friend had
brought him to me for treatment )he confided that all
this was done to gain fame, respect and ultimately
great awards like the Magsaysay, Nobel etc. Another
feature is his inconstancy and mental restlessness. He
would decide to write novels or stories and do it for
a month or so and convince his friends that he was
born to write as that is what which is going to give
his success. But suddenly he would stop writing saying
it was a very demanding task mentally and emotionally
to write everyday. That i woul write after ten years.
I should spend the next ten years in social work and
when i have become famous by doing it, then i would
write. Then he would say if only i could find a decent
girl to marry me, may be i would give it all up (i.e.
writing, social work, desire for fame etc.). He craves
for an understanding life partner. Had proposed to
another girl (again his love letter was full of his
grand philosophies and his attempts to impress or awe
her with his supposedly profound wisdom). This girl
was also taken aback and rejected his proposal.
Another interesting thing about this case is his
intense desire for company. He keeps going to his
close friends who are busy most of the time with their
work. He does not mind disturbing them and can waste
hours of their time discusing with them his theories
and his views about different abstract things. Most of
his friends are now sick of him and his theories but
since the chap is so good of heart essentially and so
brilliant that no one tels him off.

He had a traumatic relationship with his father as a
child and feels his father never accepted him. His
father always evaluated him in an unfeeling manner vis
a vis his three sisters all of whom were toppers and
did better in academics than our friend. "Rejection"
seemed to me to be a constant theme as well as
"grief/disappointments from failures". He loves salt.
Keeps awake till late in night. Always wants to prove
himself to the world. Wants people to be in awe of his
intellect. Always desires company of friends. Is
craving for a life partner. I forgor one thing. Wants
to marry very badly but does not want to have
children. Reason again is based upon one of his
strange theories. All the children are the same and
hence one should love every child as his own. So there
is no need for him to have his own children. For him,
all the children are lovable. But the truth is he
never shows any affection towards children. The irony
is 'he is setting up a home for destitute children'.
He is giving up his life for these children.

I have tried my level best to paint a verbal picture
of the essence of this facsinating personality. But
one could write much much more. I prescribed him
Natrum Mur. 10M once in 10 days. In a couple of months
he had overcome his disappointments with failed love
to a large extent. He also told me that he no longer
felt any pain with respect to his father. But with
this Rx he gained a lot of confidence. Earlier he used
to come across as someone who was not very sure of his
abilities and his future despite his attempts to awe
others with his intellect. He would repeatedly seek
confirmation from others that he was extremely good.
He depended upon his counsellor friend so much before
taking this Rx that he considered him dearer than
anyone else in this world. But after two months of Nat
Mur. his dependence upon this friend decreased and one
day he fought with him. He suddenly started to stop
showing the almost servile repect that he used to show
earlier. Started to criticise his counsellor friend
for almost every small thing that was wrong in his
life. Obviously, this led to an explosion and now they
have stopped talking to one another.

I am thinking of prescribing Palladium. Any other
ideas are most welcome.

Thanks for reading this ery long case.

Regards.
Rajiv

Dear Rajiv, could you give some indication about what needs to be cured here
(from your client's point of view and not your own) and also some physical
sx would be useful if there are any.

Also, is there any reason why you don't want to repeat Nat mur., or, to ask
it another way, in what way, if at all, has the Nat mur healed?

Best wishes, Joy

Dear Joy,

Our friend here realizes that he has adjustment
problems and that he is much more intense emotionally
and mentally than most people which has caused him
pain and disappointments all his life. He has left
himself entirely to me, requesting me to give him
remedies which can help him reduce his intensity
level. He says that he would also like to be 'normal'
and 'happy' like most others around him. His most
important problem right now is that he realizes that
there is something about him which puts off the girls
who he approaches.I know the second girl to whom he
had proposed. She told me that she likes the guy but
his love letter was so frightening. It seemed to her
that he needs not only a partner but also a willing
scapegoat who would keep listening to all his grand
theories. She told me that any girl would like to get
married to such a talented person who is so good at
heart if it were not for his obsession with proving
himself day in day out at the intellectual level even
in close relationships. She is a Secretary to one of
the Professors at the college where he studied and
hence has observed him from close quarters. He really,
really wants to marry and for that he wants to reduce
his intensity level specially with respect to obsesion
for world wide fame, recognition etc.He also told me
that the main reason why he does not go for a normal
corporate job is that it is so routine and every MBA
does it. It would give him no scope to pursue his
quest for fame as a philosopher and social worker. But
he is willing to do a job after treatment if that is
what is needed for him to settle down and start a
normal life.He also admits that he has no real love
for the poor and needy children. He is doing it mainly
for the fame associated with such a work. He is also
not sure that he has the perseverance necessary to
last it out for a life time with his social work
initiative. He told me a few days back that "I have
started to realize that I would become famous if I am
good enough. There is no point being obsessed with it.
But what can i do? This is the way I am and have
always been. I would like to become 'normal' like
others." One thing which i forgot to mention last time
is that he has an irresistible urge to bite. When
taking tea in a plastic(the translucent material used
nowadays) cup, he would bite almost the entire cup
away in a hour or so. He also keeps biting at some
cloth piece or paper etc. He is almost child like in
his demeanor. Has intense desire for company. Cannot
stay alone or do any thing alone.

I really want to help this guy as he is other wise so
simple and nice.Looking forward to your suggestions.

Rajiv,
I missed the post by Barbara, in which she entered the following biting rubric:

MIND; BITING; spoons, other things (9) : ars., bell., cham., cina, cupr.,
hell., lyss., puls., verat.

If Hell is noticed there, and in the below rubric, then Bar-c (or another Baryta) becomes an idea (clinging, dependent, leaning on others, ), as Helleborus is an acute analogue of Bar-c (Apis is also). This would be if the need to lean on others is taken as the true peculiar and what needed curing. Pulsatilla is also in the above Biting things rubric, as is Verat (censorious toward mentor, philosophical loquacity, manipulative to get attention). lyssin-(but no fear of dogs, issues with water, fears of lyssin type?); bell (discussed by venkat), cham (wants to be carried
(figurative), capriciousness--cham is "acute:" analogue of Sanicula, Tuberculinum.

MIND; DEEDS; he could do great, as if (K17, SRI-200, G15) (2) : cocain., hell.

There is another rubric possibility for one who reveres a mentor:

MIND; VENERATION (K91, SRI-11, SRI-1055, G73) (14) : anac., ars., aur., bell., cic., coff., croc., hyos., lach., lyc., puls., stram., sulph., verat.

Yet another idea is Lac-humanum, which can desire salt, and is stuck in the phase of having a caretaker and is also in the rubric Biting.
I also thought this was interesting rubric possibility offered by Barbara, subject to your judgement:

MIND; AILMENTS from; alone, being (42) : aeth., agar., ant-t., Apisin.,
Ars., asaf., aur-m., bell., bism., bov., bufo, calc., camph., cedr., clem.,
Con., Dros., elaps, Fl-ac., gels., Hep., Hyos., Kali-c., lach., lil-t.,
Lyc., Merc., mez., nat-c., nat-m., ph-ac., Phos., plb., ran-b., sep., sil.,
stann., Stram., tarent., thuj., verat., zinc.

Bismuth is there, which also desires to be held. But we dont see the GI tract symptoms which would point to Bism.

Also thought it was cogent for her to suggest possibility that maybe nat-m was still the rx

Salt in the same sentence as desires: 3Nat-m., 2lac-c., abies-c., acet-ac., acon., aeth., agar., aloe, alum-p., am-caust., am-m., ambr., anac., ant., ant-c., ant-m., anthrch., aq-mar., aral., arg., arg-n., arg-p., ars-met., art-v., atp, atro., aur-m., aur-m-n., aur-s., aza., bac., bar-m., benz-p., beryl., beryl-m., betul., borag., brom., bros-g., brucel., cadm., cadm-m., calc., calc-f., calc-m., calc-n., calc-p., calc-pic., calc-s., calc-sil., camph., cand-a., cand-p., canth., caps., carb-v., carc., cassi-s., cath-a., caust., chap., chin., chin-m., chlor., chloram., chr-m.,
cob-m., cocc., coch., con., cor-r., cori-r., crot-h., croto-t., cupr., cupr-f., cupr-m., cupr-p., cycl., dys-co., embry., ferr-i., ferr-n., ferr-p., ferr-s., flor-p., fumar-ac., funi-umb., galeo-c., galin., germ., graph., halo., hydr-ac., hydrog., hyper., ignis, ind., ip., kali-br., kali-c., kali-fcy., kali-i., kali-n., kali-p., kali-sil., kreos., lac-ac., lac-f., lac-h., lac-leo., lith-i., lith-m., lith-p., lob., lyc., lycps., lyss., mag-c., mag-m., mag-n., mag-p., mag-sil., manc., mand., mang-m., mang-n., mang-p., mang-sil., med., medus., meli., meph., merc., merc-d.,

Another remedy to consider in leaning on others is Ars, which is in the
rubric about reverence that Andy cited -- interesting rubric!

just to add emphasis to Andy's observation that this might be Lac-h; the
uncompensated state has no mentor other than one's Higher Self and has a
strong Ego and sense of self

Bismuthum would be another interesting candidate - although not listed under
simultaneous urination and vomiting.

Dear Colleague

I had an interesting case which want to share with you. A woman of 41 with 4
pregnancy, 4 live child and history of tube ligature after her last birth(
about 7 years ago) . After her last delivery and Tube ligature she has the
illness: attacks which last for 48 hours. Let me explain attacks: First she
experience sudden perspiration then after 2 minutes anxiety and after that,
anxiety and restlessness. Then belching and in the end she has nausea and
vomiting. She also has involuntary urination during vomiting. Involuntary
urination is not weird in a woman with 4 deliveries but it was interesting
that she had never involuntary urination during coughing, sneezing or
laughing or rising from a seat. It is only come by the last part of her
symptoms: Vomiting. These attacks are before menses or after menses. She
told the at least she has an attack in mount which may be before or after
menses. What should be the remedy? No other prominent mental, general
symptoms.

When I first saw her, I was puzzled: how can I solve the case. Fortunately
the case is solved now and it was so interesting for me and I want to share
it. I will tell the prescribed remedy in the next email to let anyone who
wants to guess the remedy.

Farbod
