These and other substances, such as honey (and some much worse during more
ancient times, such as animal dung and liquid alum) are put onto sponges or
sponge like material such as a wad of cotton and use in this manner.
In 1500 BC it was common enough to believe that spitting into a frog's mouth
3 times would be a reliable contraception for at least a year
