Homeopathy in Hospitals – Need for Integration

The nature of chronic diseases is a central study of homoeopathic
pathology. To understand the nature of pathological phenomena the healer
must study its causes and effects in living beings. Samuel Hahnemann
(Founder of Homeopathy) raises the subject of causation in the very
first paragraph of the Introduction of the Organon of the Healing Art.
As long as humanity walked this earth we have been exposed as
individuals and groups to illnesses of physical as well as moral causes.
As individuals we face our own personal ethical struggles and moral
crises. At the same time, we are exposed as groups to collective ethical
struggles and moral crises that are greater than the individual. The
individual must come to terms with his or her own illusions, and the
loves and hates based on them in an ethical manner. We must also come to
terms with society in general in an ethical manner that promotes harmony
in the greater community.

We are exposed to the dangers of our uncertain physical world as
individuals and collective groups. The Earth is a world fraught with
difficulties and physical dangers and no one can tell when we may be
injured or fall extremely ill. Natural calamities, loss of food and
shelter, extreme climatic conditions, or infectious diseases of acute or
chronic nature may strike at any time. The moral and ethical causes rise
from the soul, intellect and emotional disposition while physical
dangers are found in our worldly environments. For this reason,
Boenninghausen (homeopath) noted that there are inner and outer
causations as well as acute and chronic diseases.

Since the time of Hippocrates the human condition has been one of rapid
urbanization and population growth accompanied by an increase in the
complexity of human disease states. Today there has been a so-called
decrease of many infectious diseases while there is an increase of the
rate of cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, and other chronic states. This
increase of chronic states is directly related to improper nutrition,
chemical abuse, suppression, and the great stress of life in our modern
western societies.

Studies have shown that Asian countries like Japan that took on rapid
Westernization of diet and lifestyles experience an increase in number
of such diseases. This phenomenon is so well documented that these
illnesses are called "diseases of civilization". What Hahnemann
witnessed in his day is only the beginning when compared to the state of
affairs in the year 2001.

Another important aspect of Hahnemann theories is the overall negative
effect of centuries of misguided medical interventions, and toxic
medicines, and suppressive treatments. Hippocrates taught the use of
single remedies in small doses but immediately after his death his son
and grandson started selling "Hippocratic Mixtures". By the time of the
Greco-roman school the careful work of the pre-Socratic
naturalist-healers was lost to the proliferation of new invasive systems
based on theory rather than clinical observations. The suppression
syndrome plays a large role in homoeopathic pathology and includes the
individual, affected groups, as well as humanity as a whole due to
inheritance.
It is interesting to note that Samuel Hahnemann was an Allopathic
physician by initial training. In "Allopathy; A Word of Warning to All
Sick Persons [1831], Hahnemann carefully recorded the effects of the
abuse of drugs and invasive treatments on the human organism. The
Founder refers to this text in the footnote to aphorism 74 of the 6th
edition of the Organon. The pool of vitality innate to the constitution
of the human being is a precious reservoir of adaptation energy. The
draining of the human vitality and spirit through drugging, invasive
testing, and unneeded surgical interventions are major side effects of
orthodox medicine. This quality of human life cannot be measured in the
laboratory yet without vitality there is no life.

In Allopathy, A Word of Warning, Hahnemann writes: "For, by the force of
medicine to transfer the patient from one chronic disease into another
and worse malady of different appearance, and then as is usually done,
to imagine that this took place accidentally, and that the physician was
perfectly innocent of the appearance of this new sad state, is to delude
oneself, and cannot be termed curing, nor restoring the health, but
deceiving and ruining patients".

Samuel Hahnemann was an exceedingly brave and honest man. His sense of
astute observation enabled him to discover the magical healing potency
inherent in Homeopathy. He had seen the damage done by the allopathic
philosophy in his early career and renounced the practice of medicine to
become its critic at great personal costs. He became a Hippocratic
naturopath rather than practice orthodox medicine and felt many people
were better of without a doctor than with one. For this reason, he once
said that less persons would die "had they been left to nature, and kept
away from that old pernicious art".

Today we are in a position to carry forward from where he had to stop.
The diagnosis of disease, monitoring of progress of treatment and
scientific study is favored by Allopathy while the ability to heal
chronic diseases is more in homeopathy. It is therefore critical that a
holistic scientific integration of Allopathy with Homeopathy be
attempted in hospitals to securely establish the benefits of homeopathy.
